I recently bought a bay stallion. He is solid bay with the exception of havng short white socks. I have suspected he might be pinto, as both parents are pinto, so I sent away for color testing.(tobiano) Should have the results back by the end of this week.

In the meantime though, today while I was breeding him to a mare, I noticed that he has a "pinto" marking on his penis. What I mean, is that it is 2 colors...the black and pink pigment. It is mostly all black with one patch of pink. Does this verify(for sure) that he is indeed pinto, as long as he has no appy background? Just curious and would like to hear what others have to say.

Sorry for the graphic pic, but after I wrote this message, I was looking through my pics and found one that shows the "spot", so am posting it here...

Tobiano´s can be marked minimaly, but you say he has no pinto backgrund so the chance of that is etremely slim, a tobiano has to have a tobiano parent.

Friesians, who are bred to be black can have a bit of white sometimes, like a sock or a star, wich is not wanted and I have seen a white patch on stallions private parts, the white that sometimes pops up there is probably sabino, and I bet your stallion has that too.

I read Mona to have said that the stallion "has two pinto parents"

Mona --

Interesting question!!!

I think that Derby has a pink spot on his used to be favorite toy. ONE of my boys does, and I think it's him. His parents are both "solid" but his dam is roan -- could be sabino roan??? Derby could actually also be sabino roan. He is a light palomino, but when he is at his most golden in the summer, there are light hairs all over mixed in. Then his son is very visually sabino roan -- but I think the dam on him, Lou, also is

Color really fascinates me but I barely grasp some of the key concepts of it.

The horse is a minimal Pinto- if an animal is registered as having "solid" parents it usually just means that one or both is also a minimal Pinto.

As far as is known at the moment, "normal" white markings are always caused by one of the Pinto patterns- in this case I would guess Tobiano but it could be Sabino.

Coming back negative for Tobiano does not mean the horse is not Pinto.

The markings you have noted on his penis are common in Pintos and Appies.

Darn I can´t read

Well than he could very well be a minimal pinto!

You will know soon enough with the test.

Although not foolproof, both of my tobiano have purple on their gums. Have you checked that. I think he is a minimally marked pinto.

Are his parents both tobianos, overos, a mix ?? It is my belief that a 'pinto'(underlying pink skin; if there were hair there, it would be white hair!)spot on the penis is likely to be an effect of sabino, especially if it is on a horse that otherwise appears to have no 'other' kind of pinto background. Of course, your stallion could well be carrying BOTH....

I have a gelding who has NO tobiano background, but 'possibly', some splash or frame-and he definitely shows sabino--his dam has classic sabino characteristics,as does he-bald face, white on lower lip, high white on a hind leg, which comes to a point on the front of the leg-she has ONE blue eye, he does not, but he has some unconnected white spots on his legs, a bit of pink spotting on the lightly-haired skin around his anus--AND, a big pink spot on his penis. (His sire is a definite solid, with solid sire and dam(Palominos, both)-I think its possible the paternal grandsire might have been a maximum white sabino, though, and the maternal grandsire was most likely a minimal frame-with sabino??

If I were betting, I'd might bet on your horse being a minimal tobi, but with sabino...!!

I bet he is pinto. Very nice guy too!

But also wanted to awarded you for the "Bravest Post Award" too.

Yes, I also noticed that while breeding with him, when he does that "lip thing", I can see his gums are "spotted" as well. DARN! Believe it or not, this time around, I was really wanting a SOLID stallion!

Hi Margo...here are pics of his parents. Sorry, but they are the only pics of them that I have. This is his sire, Impressible Majestys Fine Design...

And this is his dam, Lowes Julie Ann...

Thanks Carolyn....award humbly accepted!! I know...it was probably a poor choice, but hey, how else can we learn!

I want to thank you for asking this question as I was wondering the same and was cautious about asking.

I have just acquired a stallion that appears to be solid Black with no markings at all. However, he has white hairs scattered throughout his body with a higher concentration of them on his lower front legs (roan patches). When he drops, he also has a pinkish area on his penis. Not a definate spot, just kind of fades to pink. I suspect it is the result of the Sabino gene.

Even if yours tests negative for Tobiano, he may still cary Sabino.

Sad to say that I have looked at a lot of horses private parts, but I noticed this on my QH/Morgan gelding. He was solid black but had a white patch right there. After that, wanting to know if it was normal, I looked at some of the other horses(non of whom are paints), all of them had a white patch right there. I actually have never seen one that is solid black without the white patch.

I can't tell you if he is a paint or not, but I can tell you that the spot has nothing to do with it. He is a gorgeous boy though!!

He is a genetic pinto....and with two pinto parents, it's possible he could even be HOMOZYGOUS!

Fine Design throws a lot of pintos but also carries an appaloosa gene. I would expect Bay Escapade to be a minimally marked pinto but don't be surprised if he gets some app carracteristics.

Thanks for that info. He(Bay Escapade) is 3 years old now, and at this time, does not have any appy characteristics at all, so am hopeful that none will show up if they havn't yet. Fingers crossed! I LOVE appys, but not what I am wanting in my stallion at this time.

I also got my test results back on this boy, and just as I suspected, he IS a minimally marked tobiano.

Normally, I would be ecstatic with such findings, however, I was really in search of a SOLID stallion this time around. I wanted to get down to keeping just one stallion with my small mare herd, and I wanted a solid so that I could safely use him on any of my pinto patterns and even appy(I plan to get an appy mare some time down the road too) without crossing my patterns. So here I am...once again, right back to square one.

All may not be lost.

Is he homozygous (TT) or Heterozygous (nT) for tobiano? If he is heterozygous and therefore only carries one tobiano gene, he may very well only throw face white and leg white to his foals (or no tobiano at all, by the same right he could have very colorful foals, only time will tell). If he is what you want in all other areas, then I say try him for a few years and see what you get.

If you truly want a "solid" colored horse, then you need to find one with absolutely no white anywhere that comes from non-pinto parents; also no sabino roaning. Normal face and leg markings usually come from one of the "overo" pattern genes.
