I've got a second grader also learning about a "friendly letter".

For his project, the whole class is participating and each child will select one family that lives in a different state (or even better) different country who is willing to host Stanley for a few weeks. The host family will take Stanley to interesting places, include him in family events and enjoy his charming company. The host family will also receive a poster that they fill out telling of Stanley's adventures with them. The host family may also choose to send postcards, trinkets or photographs from their fair city, After vacationing for a few weeks Stanley will return to school along with the poster and any other items the host family sends along. The children will welcome Stanley's return with a Welcome back to Schumann Elementary Celebration.

We are supposed to give the teacher the address of a family that would be a good host for Stanley. We are supposed to select a family that is willing to include Stanley in their lives. Pictures, postcards and humorous stories of Stanley's adventures will make this a more enjoyable project for the second graders. It is really important to be committed to following through with this though because it is a graded project for the kids and they are very excited about it.

I have to turn in the name and address tomorrow and I've been trying to figure out who to ask and saw that Rabbitfizz is doing one for someone else.

Is anyone interested in doing this with our son?? It is a lot to ask, but who knows, it might be fun!!!

What exactly is a flat Stanley? I live in West Virginia and I have 2 daughters ages 8 and 3. We dont do a whole lot an occasional trip to the movies or bowling alley. Tell me more about this and I might be interested in doing it.

It is a project that kids do to learn about families in different states and countries.

There is a story that they will read in class about a young boy name Flat Stanley. Stanley accidentally gets smashed by a bulletin board and becomes as flat as a pancake. He wanted to go on a vacation so his parents folded him up and sent him through the mail.

Each child sends their own "Flat Stanley" on a vacation to host family in a different state or country and they do whatever they want with him to be creative and share stuff about their family, their interests and activities, their state or country and things they like to do then they mail him back. When he comes home with all his little "treasures" each child shares it with the class.

Well I would be more than happy to help you or anyone else out with this. Just let me know.. you can PM me or email me at [email protected]. I think this would be fun for the kids to do. Maybe I can talk my daughters teacher into doing something like this. She is also in second grade. Could someone tell me what you put on this? or do you have a picture or copy of yours that I could see? My Girl Scout troop is doing something with the different countries next month maybe this is something they could do if the the teacher doesnt want to.

Sherry, I am the one with the other Flat Stanley project going. He is visiting England right now, but when people send in pcitures I will be posting them on the forum for all to see.

The story is, Flat Stanley was a little boy that wanted to travel but, his family was poor and could not afford to send him anywhere because it was so expensive for plane fare. Well, one day a bulletin board fell on Stanely and flattened him. Making the most of a bad situation his mother decides that if she just folds him up and puts him in an envelope she can mail him to all the places he wanted to visit and it would be so much less expensive.

Our class is using it for a geography lesson and to learn about other cultures and areas of the world.

Flat Stanley himself is made out of a peice of posterboard cut out like a gingerbread man. The kids each color theirs before they send them off. He is about twleve inches tall.

Thanks alot for filling me in on this neat little project. Like I said earlier I would be more than willing to help anyone with this project. I am going to talk to my daughters teacher and see if she might be willing or wanting to do something like this or see if my Girl Scouts want to do this.

Thanks Again Everyone!

Sherry

Just wanted to tell everyone how excited my son is.

SHANE (aka Lynda) has agreed to host Stanley in Northern Ireland (how COOL is THAT?!?!)

And I just heard from my nephew that works for the government and is currently in Quarter, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (try finding THAT on a map). I was shocked to learn he knew who "STANLEY" was because a friend of his had just done one for someone, so I am going to check with the teacher and see if another can be sent to him. They were really hoping for some overseas destinations so I'm thinking they will want to use him too.

I'll post an update on his adventure when the project is over and done.

THANK YOU LYNDA!!!

(I owe you a HUGE favor, so keep me in mind for anything similar I can do for you or your family)
