I am trying to decide what to do with my life.

I wanted to be a vet, decided I didn't want to make my hobby a career.

Then I wanted to be an editor to a magazine but I really do not want to live in the city.

I am selecting my courses for my junior year at highschool and decided to take Anatomy and Physiology, because now I am seriously thinking about going to med school after college to become a pediatrician.

I am a bit worried though, because 8 + Years of more school after college seems like a long time, and it will probably be difficult.

Also, what about the hours I will work at a hospital? I would still like to have miniature horses and I don't want to be completely engulfed in a world of work.

My other choice I am interested in would be real estate.

Hon one of my my grand adughters is in her third year of pre med this year. Her major is Biomedical sciences. Now between this year and next year (her senior year) she will be applying for a medical school. Hopes to get in our own state as she's been working very hard and keeping her grades up.

It takes a lot of study hours and while the business majors are out partying she is studying and she also works as consierge at a 4* hotel to help pay her personal expenses.

It's a long road for sure and you have to really really want it..now as for how long the work hours are I couldn't tell you but any good carreer counseler should be able to tell you.

You don't have to get the MD, you can get a D.O. and I think have a more regular life with regular office hours, very few weekends, and more normal family life;) Check into ,I've been doctored by both and liked both depending on what I needed and both pay well.

Congratulations on your looking to the fulture and you go for it.You can do anything, just as long as you want it bad enough!

I would tend to agree with Barnbum. You don't need to decide the REST OF YOUR CAREER -- NOW.

Go to college and start working on your basic requirements first. In the meantime, continue researching all the various fields that you might be interested in. Don't worry about a major until you are into your sophomore year at least. You can put down anything at first, and always change it later.

I am pleased, however, to see that you are taking the time to seriously think ahead for your future. A lot of young adults don't do that.

My husband is a paramedic. He LOVES his job. He's very good at it too. One of his good friends became a paramedic also. After doing that for several years, she committed and went to college and onto medical school to be a doctor. It was a lot of hard work and her school loan is unbelievable.

If you think this is the path you want to go down, I would highly recommend riding with a medic unit, volunteering in the hospital or ER. Find out if you can handle it. It takes a very special kind of person to deal with that much pressure.

Good luck though!

I have a few friends who are currently in med school, or who have just graduated. From what I hear, it is a LOT of work--you certainly wouldn't have time to do much with your horses while in school, or doing your residency, but afterwards, I'm sure you would. My cousin is a doctor, and very involved with horses, for example. If you would like, I could put you in touch with someone in med school so you could ask them your specific questions. Good for you for starting to think what you would like to do with your life--in my opinion, you can never start planning for your career too soon!
