A couple of years ago someone here in the valley had two weanlings stolen. The foals were never found again and they were taken right out of his back yard!

I just got word yesterday that another friend this year, went out yesterday morning to find one of her weanling fillies tied with a telephone cord to a pole just inside her pasture. Thank heavens one of their big dogs- a Rottie, had been loose there, and probably scared the people away. It appears as though it may have been two people- one inside the fence to hand it over to another person on the outside to quickly put in a car or van or something....

They will no longer be able to allow their horses to be left out to graze at night and the dogs will be kept out also. What is this world coming to???

So watch out!! The little weanlings are easy for men to pick up and carry off and small enough to stuff in a car or something without using a trailer. Appears that foaling season and the 'wee ones' being around is also a target for people to get their babies stolen.

Thank goodness for big dogs!

Some people are just so heartless to steal the little weaners.. Or any horse for that matter!

Oh no! Horse thieves are still rampant, huh?

Good dog!

 that is so sad.

thank goodness for the dog.How would a very young make it without there dam, so sad?

i am glad this story had a happy ending.

Thats so heartless and a never ending worry..a few years back someone in our club wrote about a mare who was sexually tortured by teens with a broom and the time l saw the light that not all people are nice to others animals and could give a rats butt...

It's bad enough that someone would steal an animal to try to make money or to get an illicit pet for themselves, but I REALLY worry that some of these creeps are out to have fun and games at the expense of an innocent animal...fraternity or sports team initiation rites and the like.

Whatever the reason, I say once again...

The more I know about people, the more I love animals.

There are definately some sick people in this world...I am glad we don't live by any busy road where people see my foals, I guess it would be tempting to some people, All I can think is the poor foals. What is worse is the stupid teens and others that do things for the fun of it, causing harm to animals, in one instance(big horse related) In our area taking target practice on a man's beloved Bred mares, he lost 4 horses that day, well more if you count the foals that where due within that month. I swear, I am not a violent person but in a case like that, I could seriously kill someone that did that to my animals. :new_2gunsfiring_v1: :new_2gunsfiring_v1:

One reason my girls come in at nite, the good doggie deserves some sirloin steak!! Glad they were foiled!

That sort of stuff makes me dam MAD and nervous all at the same time.

We live just off a busy secondary highway and this time of year people come driving by slowly to see the foals out in the pasture......Both Larry and I always look when we hear a car or truck slowing down. We also are careful to pull our moms and babies inside at night.

People are nuts, so you just never know what to expect.......

I often wonder too what this world is coming too. I am so glad the BIG DOGGIE was there and most likely scared the jerk off, and her little filly wasnt hurt. You just cant trust anyone now a days. I am always so reluctant when people stop in to see the minis...they get very little info on my minis out of me and I make sure they leave knowing we have cameras on at all times, and dogs. Corinne

Of course DOGS are one of our first line alarms for such things as this.....but, did you know that many race tracks used to use donkeys? A lone donk will normally bray at a person approaching, much as a dog barks. Just a thought for those of you who may have them! Of course, they now have electronic detectors.

It breaks my heart to think of those who harm animals, and what the animal suffers due to this. It is a proven thing that many deranged adults, who are in the criminal system, were also animal abusers in their younger years. Sad but true.

I'm with Donna...........I would do great harm!! I own guns and can use them.

There are many electronic, wireless devices for driveway alerts on the market. They are basically a device that sounds when the "line" between the two elements are broken. If you are in an area where these issues are a problem, please consider such things for your own peace of mind. EVEN if they are only at the entrance to your barns, etc. They can be raised above the height of the dog or cat

: Even the motion sensored spotlights can be a deterrant. Not good if horses are out but, if all inside, might be a good thing to have. Most predators do NOT want to be seen! It is a shame that we need to be so vigilant but, a fact of life. Consider some of the most easily installed devices on today's market. Technology is so amazing now -- the device may not be advertised for such use but, think about alternative uses!

Believe it or not, I have heard that here in Wyoming horse stealing is still on the books as a hanging offense.

I live on a major higway going to the beach arean and my foals are always in a pasture in the back of the farm never out near the road where people can easily see or take them.they are also put in the barn at night until they are several months old.Makes me feel more secure and I get to handle them more.I just cringe at the thought of someone taking a young baby away from its mom.Horse or human)

This is why I LOVE barking dogs!

Good dog! So glad the thief was interupted, makes me nervous about my babies. We have all kinds of motion detector lights and cameras, as well as noisy dogs, but still....

We kind of got carried away with the cameras actually - started with them of course to watch mares, and they were so handy to check on everything that we now have several in the barn, and at least a couple on the driveway and front of the barn. Have seen a few escape artist horses on them as well as unexpected visitors in the barn.

Thank goodness they didn't get away with it this time! There are some pretty awful people around.

What a good good dog, worth his weight in gold!

I am so glad that years ago I put in a bunch of scotch pines and now you can't see the front pasture from the road.

How scary! :new_shocked: Fortunately...our field is behind our house, and our Minis are never out at night. We also have a HUGE Pyrenees to protect them.

I'm confused tho. You said the weanling was tied to a post by a cord. If there were two people involved...one to hand the weaner over the fence....why would it be necessary to tie it? Were there more weanlings out there they were after at the same time?
