Chance’s Miniature Horse Rescue

Subjective/Objective:

Babbit: 4y/o bay mini stallion

History/Presenting Concern: Recent rescue (1 week ago), initial exam. No abnormalities noted. De-wormed with Strongid Saturday.

Physical Exam:

Temp: 100.1, Pulse: 44, Resp: 12, MM: pink, CRT < 2sec, GI +/+, increased gas sounds. Heart, lung and GI sounds within normal limits. BCS (body condition score) of 4/9. Bright, alert and responsive. Eyes, ears, nose, lymph nodes, sinuses, musculoskeletal, integument within normal limits other than: sensitivity in cervical spine over C5-C6. Two descended testicles palpated. Hooves overgrown/cracked, due for trim. Mild carpal valgus and base narrow/cow hocked stance in hind limbs. No lameness noted at walk/trot on straight away.

Vaccination: Influenza (IN), Tetanus (IM left neck),

Assessment/Plan: Looks good. Make all feed changes slowly (over a 2-3 week period) to help avoid colic. As he has had a recent diet change and his intestinal tract has increased gas sounds, monitor for signs of colic. Also, as he is in a pasture with green grass, monitor him for signs of laminitis (lameness, heat in feet, increased digital pulses). Please call immediately if abnormalities occur. Slowly increase his feed to a weight gaining ration. Castration in 2+ weeks if he continues to do well, Rhino vaccination at that time, booster vaccines in 4-6 weeks.
