I'm on a reading binge, having just gotten a library card again since Lord only knows how long. I'm hunting for good horse fiction reads. I'm a huge fan of Riders by Jilly Cooper. I just finished Remember Summer, Blind Beauty, and The Lady. Does anyone have any fiction suggestions that are horse based?

Check out 'Riding Lessons' and 'Flying Changes' by Sara Gruen.

My friend gave me the first one last year for Christmas, and I couldn't put it down. The second one was good...but not quite as good as the first

Sara Gruen? As in "Water for Elephants?" If so, then I'm totally on board! I loved that book! If you haven't read "Water for Elephants," do it but grab a box of Kleenex!

Yes!! I have Water for Elephants, but haven't had a chance to read it (I don't want to start it when I've been as busy as I have been

She has a new book out called 'Ape House'

I haven't read Water For Elephants but I would love to. I also heard they are currently filming the movie for it.

Oh, do read it! I picked it up one night from a friend and couldn't put it down. Cover to cover in one read and the next day had to go back and read it again. It's really, really worth it!

I ordered the two Gruen books, thanks for telling me about them. I hope they are in by Thursday, it's my reading day. I did read "The Horse Whisperer" this past week. My hubby brought it home for me and I was kind of 'meh' about reading it, but it was actually quite good.

I was impressed with 'The Horse Whisperer' too when I read it.....then I saw the movie....that was awful! The only time I've walked out of the theatre before the movie was finished.

Hope you like the Gruen books!!

Sara Gruen also has written Ape House. I haven't gotten a chance to read it, but I bet its good.

Not really "horsey based" but one of the main characters trains circus horses - great book "Like Water for Elephants."

I put off reading "Like Water for Elephants" for a very long time. I can't even tell you why. I finally "read" it a couple of months ago. I "read" about 75% of my books using audio versions on my MP3 player. It made an insanely good story even better because of the two people who acted as the narrators of the story. I can't recommend it enough.

I have "Ape House" in my queue to be listened to. I follow a book blogger who has very similar tastes in books as I do. She was over the moon about this book, so I am looking forward to reading it.

With all that said, I just bought the e-book version of Flying Changes and added Riding Lessons to my cart for my next audio download. Thanks for this suggestion!

I will add it to my list. I have been on a reading tear the last little while. Right now I am reading Dick Francis "Under Orders". It's very good.

You know, I don't think I've ever tried any Dick Francis. Isn't his stuff mostly race horses and mysteries?
Pretty much so. I LOVE them- I think I have almost all of them, and in fact am reading one of his first books again (Odds Against)for the umteenth time. Some violence, some sex, but pretty tame by today's standards...

He knows how to write a good story and although the backdrop of the stories are the racetracks in England they can still appeal to everyone. He always has amusing characters and very good at keeping it suspenseful to the end. Definitely try at least one.
