I need some help here with color ID.

My grullo mare had this appy colt. I'm working on getting paperwork done and I'm unsure of his color. He looks to be a creamy buckskin, has a very faint blanket and blue eyes. I was going to put down buckskin, but my farrier told me today he thinks he is cremello. What do you all think? Maybe silver dun?? His dam is soild grullo, sire is a chestnut leapord appy.

Boy i don't have a clue but he has to be in the buckskin/dun family with that dorsal stripe...whatever color he is,

WOW WOW WOW!!!!!

Look at that conformation already AND that neckset! WOW those legs!!!! You should post a pic of dad and a full pic of mom to better help everyone =)

Genetically, he cannot be a cremello. Not with a sorrel sire. So my guess would be your first guess was right. Of course, you could always just check that box and let the registry decide. I can't really help you narrow it down much more (he is a rather hard to pin down color), but he does resemble a buckskin.

Thanks! Ithink he real nice too.

here is dam Nikki grullo.

Oh, well, now I don't think the sire is sorrel either. Hard to tell from that pic, but he doesn't really look sorrel. In this case, I have no clue what color your new boy is. He's very pretty though, and whatever color he is, it is a very nice color. Kind of reminds me of a silver buckskin.

This is a grullo, if the sire could carry silver it might be silver grullo, there is no cream parent, (unless mom hides it) so no chance on buckskin.

But grullo this foal sure is.

Many grullo foals star out this lighter shade - I agree that he does appear to be exactly that.

Silver added on top would be a nice bonus!

He is Grullo.

All mine are that colour- I did not realise they could be any other colour until I came on US Forums, it is why in the UK they are called "Blue Duns"

The sire could easily be Chestnut base Appy- the colour in the spots tends to condense and look far darker than it is.

I have not found Cream affects the base colour of a Black Dun (Grullo) so it would only show if you had him tested or by breeding.

This is Mouse, who I always show when this query comes up.

She is a Black Dun (Grullo)

I agree with what the others have said...grulla/dun. ( and VERY cute!)

Your farrier is sorely lacking in color knowledge if he thinks that foal is a cremello.....it has dark skin, dorsal & dark mane & tail....not to mention BOTH parents would have to carry creme to produce a cremello! Just because it's body is a creme color, certainly doesn't make it a cremello.

Thank you all for the help.

I did not think he was cremello.I always understood them to have light skin and points not darkr ones.

I was thinking along the dun cloors too. And hearing that grullo start out light, really helps.

I'll put him down as grullo/dun. :bgrin

He is a grullo -this is what grullo foal color looks like- if the sire carries agouti, he could be a zebra dun (registered as dun) but he doesn't look like a zebra dun to me

If you want to check out grullo/grulla foal coat colors - check out this site www.grullablue.com/colors/grullocolor.htm
