I just added this four year old gelding to my herd but am trying to sort out his color. Papers say buckskin, but looks chestnut to me. Then there's always the chance he's a dunn. Lol! I shaved him yesterday & before I did his coat color was more chocolate. I'm thinking chestnut. What do you think?

He could be liver chestnut but it is hard to say with him being all naked

Do you have any photos of him with his clothes on??

For a gelding the color genetics are really of no consequence, but he looks to me to be a Smokey Silver Black with a very sunbleached mane and tail.

Regarding Dun, does he have a dorsal stripe????

I'm going to say black-based, as my sorrels clip up still looking red underneath, where this guy is still dark (black/gray underneath). And, I've seen that reddish mane on sunbleached blacks and bays. I just won't venture to guess which black-based color he might be.

**Nope no dorsal stripe. Mane was previously died black (over a year ago), so might be the sun taking it's toll on the damaged hair. All I have as un unwrapped shot is as a baby on his papers. I will scan and upload it later today. Thanks for the input. I know being a gelding it really doesn't matter, but I'm still curious :)

If his mane has been dyed and from the color close to his neck and his legs look smokey. I am going to say he is a silver bay. My colt clipped out the same color and he is without a doubt silver bay. Do you know the colors of his sire and dam?

Well I know nothing about the color genetics...I am amazed by the amount of knowledge out there. I am curious as how to correct the 'red' mane? I have a yearling (black appaloosa) that also has the red hair on his mane and tail. It detracts from his handsomeness, IMO, and would like to fix it. Can someone advise me on how to do this properly?

thanks

Based on the younger photos, I still think Smokey Silver Black.

If you knew the colors of the sire and dam, that would help in determining his color.

No sure about his dam, but his sire is Little Kings Buck Zeus

The color looks very much like our National Champion / Res. National Grand Champion / Halter Hall of Fame stallion, Destiny, who is a smokey silver black (black + silver dilute + cream dilute). Often in a smokey silver black horse, the cream dilute gene inhibits the ability of the silver gene to lighten the mane and tail:

OK, sire is listed as Cremello, so Cream is definitely in the mix. Your gelding cannot be a Silver Bay, Bay, or Liver Chestnut. The addition of Cream would make the Bays a Buckskin and make the Chestnut a Palomino. Therefore, your choices are Smokey Black, Smokey Silver Black, or an odd shade of Buckskin. I still believe Smokey Silver Black. I don't think Agouti (Bay) is in the mix, and I definitely think Silver is.

Thank you so much for the input. Taz definitely looks like the stallion above.

If you dye the mane black, I've found that they turn REALLY red and sun bleached. Especially if you use cheap hair dye.
