Here's another good example of an LGD being "non-threatening" to his charges... Stuart wanted to come to me, but didn't want to spook Cosmo, the Alpaca - you can see his "submission" in his pose, and the way he's averting his gaze. He's not afraid of Cosmo - just letting him know that he won't be bothering him!
I had neglected to shear Cosmo last year and his coat was matted and pulling on him in places. I tried to leave as much coat on as I could, as we should have another several weeks of what passes for "winter" in SoCal. Cosmo is a fawn pinto Alpaca gelding... we've owned him for about 6 years now. He used to be one of our sheep flock guardians, but we no longer raise sheep - all we have left is one ewe, a former bottle baby/pet. She's had the run of the property for years, as she wasn't one we wanted to be bred. Now she and Cosmo are in one of the old sheep pens (which will eventually be converted into mini-pens!) and we're hoping that they can both roam the property with the dogs - Nani (the sheep) can graze low and Cosmo can help prune the trees up higher!
: ... And now that Cosmo is HALF of our fiber-flock instead of 1/40th, his fleece will not be neglected again!
I had tossed Cosmo in with Appy after shearing him just because I needed a place to put him overnight... they got along great. I was taking some photos and accidentally got this one - it reminds me of the "pushmepullyou" from the original 1967 Dr. Doolittle movie (with Rex Harrison!)
Appy is semi-fuzzy since he was bodyclipped last in November... will have to do it again in a week or two before our first show of the year!
