Another post got me to thinking. I cant imagine ever selling a horse w/o calling back the seller and at least offering him/her back to her or at least let them know of your plans to sell....even if there is no contract. Certainly rescue ( or what you would consider rescue )situations would not wouldnt be done in the same way unless you recieved your horse directly from the rescue group and in that case they would have their own rules.

Do you always call the previous owner?

I would say yes ( except for a couple that I purchased mostly b/c I felt bad for them )

I would do it for sure. Look at it this way, leave no stone unturned when you want to sell a horse. The goal is to find a buyer.

Did the same with my 1 year old mini aussie, and she said she would take her, but doesn't have the money to buy her back.

I have in some circumstances let the previous owner know that I was offering the horse for sale, but other times I have not. I do appreciate when my clients let me know they are offering a horse I sold them, even if I can't or don't want to buy the horse back, it's nice to be able to follow up on where the horse goes.

you know , as I have found...people that neglect -abuse animals are not thinking rationally , and have an "accountability " issue. I realize that 99% of abused horses will end up dieing in the abusers hands because they dont think clearly enough to let the horse go, and give it a better home. They will always give an excuse of why the horse in in the state its in unfortunatly . We need to find a better way of protecting our horses from these people. I have only given one horse away..it was given free to a therapy program , the horse was fully trained, registered , and came with all the bridals , blankets, cart harness etc (even 25 stall mats as I was leaving the country) The contract left the horse in my name, as he belongs to me, and is on loan, so they have no legal rights to sell the horse. Before I imported my new horse here , you bet I called the Therapy program first and offered to take my horse back if they needed me to. Fortunatly he is the star of the program is they love him very much. This wouldnt work for breeders as they need the money.. but things can be done, be creative, do follow ups, contact vets in the area and tell them to notify you if there is a problem , or the SPCA. but do something, if you care about the life of your horse. There are always addons to contracts, I have a mare that the breeder wants to breed one day, so in my contract it states that if I breed her she has a right to the foal. ( i wont breed her)So things can be done ..good luck finding an answer.

Krissy, thanks, this really wasnt meant to be about rescue or people taking care or not taking care of their animals.Just me being nosey and wondering if people do call the previous seller and see if perhaps they would like their horse back. My thoughts too Kim!

For those that contacted others....I DO NOT PLAN ON SELLING OR REHOMEING Any of my horses...god willing they will be with me forever.

...like I said...I was just be nosey and wondering.....thats it

No, normally I don't. The exception to the rule is if/when the seller says to me, if you ever do decide to sell, please let me know before you do, and that has only happened once over all these years.
