Im starting a daily wormer (Strongid C2x) and had a few questions. In the past I've always been really against using a daily dewormer, didnt like the idea of feeding my horse a "poison" daily. Still not fond of giving him a "poison" daily, but im not fond of the alternative either. I plan to keep him on it until the first frost, then over winter switch back to regular rotational worming. He is kept at a show barn that does not have huge areas for turn out, and he is stall kept . He is being worked every other day, and is turned out on days hes not worked, he's never bouncing off of the walls or anything, so I feel his exercise needs are being met. My issues are that he always seems to poop on his hay before eating it, and he does it if hes in a stall or paddock, and also with the small area, I feel that worms are an issue.

Now, we normally rotate wormers every 6 weeks according to what our vet recommends in our area, but recently the horses fecals show a high number of worms by the time that weeks comes around. Please dont jump down my throat, I have been contemplating this for months, and discussed it with my vet, and right now feel that it is whats best for my horses.

He was wormed about 2 weeks ago with Ivermectin. My plan was to worm him with Equimax to cover our bases with tapes, then start the daily wormer the very next day. Does this sound like the right plan?

Also, from what I understand, while he is on the daily wormer, I only need to paste worm him in the spring and fall, is that correct? Of course, I will do fecals in between.

Those of you who use the daily wormer, how much do your 34" horses get? Of course I'll go by the manufacturers directions, I just havent received it yet to read the label.

You give the daily wormer by weight. Get a weight tape

I know it goes by weight of the horse, but is it by weight or volume of the supplement? Is says .5 ounce per 250lbs. Is that half of a 1oz measuring scoop, or 1/2 an oz weighed?

Ounces are always weighed. That's why most supplements come with their own scoops, they are calibrated for the weight of the supplement they come with.

I have used Stronigd 2X on my minis (and the big horse) for years. The minis are still on the Preventicare Program through Pfizer, but they just stopped enrolling new horses last week. On that program, they all get paste wormer twice a year - spring and fall. I was told by my vet - who said he checked with Pfizer - that the minimum amount to feed a mini is for the 250 pound dose, using the measure supplied with the wormer. I figured (for the 2X) that amount to be 1 tablespoon, so all my 34" and under minis get that same dose. You might want to check with your vet or directly with the company just to be sure.

mydaddysjag, what you are planning is exactly what I just did with Shake. He was wormed in January at Taylors with Ivermectin. I wormed him about three days after he arrived here with Equimax and started him on Strongid the next morning. I am a HUGE fan of Strongid, not only does it keep the fecal egg counts low, it is wonderful for putting and keeping weight on a tough keeper. (Not that Shake has that problem, lol)

I get my Strongid through Smart Pack Equine, in fact I get all three of his supplements from them and I'm very happy with how economical it is. Also, since I keep Shake at a boarding facility and not at home, I can rest easy knowing that he is getting exactly the right amount of his supplements every day.
