Hand served my stallion to my mare last month, once a day till she'd gone out of season. yesterday she went back into season again. I know mares can show signs of it even tho they're pregnant but was curious if it was harder for horses to get preggas first time round. I'm not putting her in with her man this time round tho, the weather is starting to turn cold.

thanks

While no is the correct answer, there are some reasons that maiden mares don't get in foal easily. Immaturity will keep young, maiden mares from settling. A tight cervix will keep them from getting in foal. And some mares don't get in foal on one breeding cycle.

An immature mare can have transitional heat cycles until her body is matured...had a 2 yr old filly remain in heat for a month and a half once...if you are trying to breed two year olds yes you should expect more issues getting them settled (don't know what age your filly is). Personally I do not breed until mares are 3 or 4 yrs of age and have no more problems settling a maiden then any other mare. I would also say in my experiance mares that are difficult to settle as maidens are difficult their entire breeding career.

My mare is 6 in sept but she did go into season late in the year so maybe it was a transitional heat before slowing down over winter?

Nope, have had maidens settle on their first cycle, however regardless of age and breeding history, many mares dont settle on the first heat (I call that lucky) and some take two or even 3 cycles to settle.
