I had the most wonderful day today. Actually yesterday wasn't bad either.
I had a great lesson yesterday with Flirt, she is doing so well. We are struggling a little bit with MY issues, I have a tendency to really overdrive on my right side, I am left-handed so I don't know why!
Today was especially wonderful. My first lesson was with Flirt, and I feel that when we get a chance to do two lessons in a row it really accelerates our learning. Today we slowed things down quite a bit and Patty had me actually make my right rein longer to keep me off it. Well, that did the trick we got a lot straighter and woohee boy we ended up on a great note! Oh I just love that feeling! One funny thing. Whenever I feel that we have had an extra great lesson, when I go to Flirt's head after I get out of the cart she always nickers at me. I don't know if she is just glad to see me or if she is saying "good job!" but it always gives me the warm fuzzies!
I switched up and got Ally. I have been doing round pen conditioning and a little ground-driving with her lately but haven't driven her in the cart in a while. I am actually between carts for her, as my Pacific Smart Cart hasn't arrived yet, I sold the meadowbrook, and my Jerald is over at Patty's with Flirt. I finally got to hitch her up to the new Jerald, and boy that cart looks like it was made for her. The mahogany stain is so perfect with my bay roan horses! She is actually a silver bay roan pinto (could we possibly put any more colors into her??? lol!), and that mahogany stain just looks fabulous! She looked soo gorgeous today.
I have always had a hard time with Ally going to the right; she wants to counterbend and dive out through her right shoulder. We were all over the place in the beginning of our lesson, but Patty came out and said well the good news is that all of these issues are very fixable. She told me to draw her to the outside with the left rein, then keep bumping the right rein to keep her straight. I had to exaggerate it quite a bit in the beginning, but it worked and worked well! It is the first time I really felt Al coming nicely through the corners going to the right. SUCCESS!!!
We then went in and did the entries for the Area VIII regional show in Monroe in mid-June. I am taking Ally too! So I will have my little jr. halter stallion, my under Single Pleasure Mare, and my over Country Mare. I am so excited about this! Ally is such a good girl. She is the one I am preparing to be my granddaughter's horse in the next few years.
We had such a great and fun day. I just love working with Patty, she is such a neat person and a great instructor as well as trainer. Oh one more thing from the day, I had Patty drive Flirt for me for a few minutes so I could watch her, and she looks AMAZING. I just can't keep the smile off my face tonight. Will definitely sleep well and have sweet dreams, and of course will be driving Ally again tomorrow!
