Ever wish you had a vet in the family.

A few years ago I was feeding animals for some people while they were on vacation and found a cat hit in the road. I took her home,didn't expect her to survive the ride home. Her main problem was she was weak and hungry. A trip to the vets office some meds and food she got stonger. I figured i'd get her fixed and move her inside. After awhile she decided she wasn't happy being inside. I fixed her a nice heated bed and water dish in my garden shed,let her out during the day.Yesterday I went out to feed everyone and she wouldn't eat,her eye is swelled and runny. This morning the same,not eating so I called the vet and made a appointment for tomorrow. Got off the phone and she started eating,eye looks a little better

. There are stray cats around and my fear is she will get something from them,so better safe than sorry. I'm hoping one of my kids will go to vet school

I sure do but while Raven is shooting for vet school by the time all is said and done I think it is going to be cheaper to go to a vet rather then send her thru school LOL

I too wanted to become a vet (and through recent events wish I was) I loved the thought of helping sick animals, but couldn't handle putting them down. I talked to a friends husband who was an ex vet and asked him why he quit, he said one year he was on call on Christmas eve and someone called to have a pony put down. No big deal, went out and the horse was perfectly fine (chronic colicer, but had been fine) Ok, and on top of that he had to put down this healthy horse chistmas eve night while the whole family including all the kids (whose horse is was) were watching. Talk aout hard to do.

He didn't have to do that. A vet can turn away clients at any time and is under no law that says he has to perform an act that he feels unethical or immoral.

I am shooting to become a vet(hopefully) and my sister recently made the comment "Perfect, you can come over and do my horses!" hehe

My cat is eating today and the swelling is down but i'm still going to take her in. I figure if I cancel the appointment she'll get sick again lol. We are very fortunate to have several great vets in our area

Update,I took the cat to the vet and she said she thinks she was bitten by a spider or something. The swelling is pretty much gone and she's eating again.

Glad to hear your cat is doing better! For our clients having a pet with a swollen face like that always freaks them out as the first thing that runs through the clients head is anaphylactic reaction.

I have to agree with txminipinto on the euthanasia story. We have never and will never euthanize a perfectly healthy animal at our clinic and we have turned many people away. Euthanasia is a hard and very sad decision for all involved, but it is always comforting to know that the animal will no longer suffer and that it leaves this world with peace and dignity. I dont think I could ever be part of a clinic that would euthanize a perfectly healthy animal if there was another choice. I could not morally or ethically live knowing that.
