OK, I have a mare that foaled in July last year and although I always hand breed I held her back till late August and she is the stallions favorite so she always spends the winter with him. Never noticed her coming into heat and assumed she took the year off. Did a wee foal test a few months ago just to make sure, but was certain she was NOT as she did not show anything. Test negative. Well this mare has NOT come back into heat this year at all. No biggee-she wants to take another year off? Good for her..I have three kids, I get it! well she does NOT look pregnant, in fact she is a bit skinny so I have upped her feed and she gets some alone time in her stall to eat in peace. Well I was feeling around her and she has a bag! Mainly on one side. Even if she was bred July would be the earliest, so too soon, so I am wondering if it is a false pregnancy or if her filly from last year, who was weaned last year, her trying to nurse has stimulated a bag? I had the filly back in with her last month for a few weeks but that is all. Just surprised to find that under there! ANy one have similar experiences??

my big horse geldings weaning process took untill he was 2 years old when i took him to school with me after that his mom didnt want him any more. but when i first started to wean him i brought him to another farm for a couple of months and as soon as i brought him back she started lactating again so i took him away again, when i brought him back same thing, like i said this went on for 2 years. i have a pic that shows him almost on his knees trrying to nurse, because he was bigger than her!

I don't know. I had a mare that weaned her colt in December. The following July my other mare foaled. Both mares nursed him. But on the other hand I had a friend that had a pony that ran the barn area and a yearling colt (Arab) got out. There were other mares at the barn that were due around the first part of Feb. The pony did not look pregnant but she was bagging. The owner said it was simpathy (sp?) for the other mares that were foaling (3 total). I went to feed my horses one morning and sure enough that simpathy bag had a real cute filly nursing on it. She was 1/2 grade pony and 1/2 arab.

It is very common for mares to "rebag" when reintroduced to their foals, especially if its only a yearling. This can happen with four year olds! Keep mom and babies apart!
