A lot of you know, my horse Gracie has carcinoma (cancer) in her sinus cavity and as a result, there is a lot of tissue damage that is occuring on her face.

Fly season is starting and I need to get a fly mask on her quickly, but I need something soft and non-irritating. I seem to remember there are black nylon fly masks for full-size horses- do they make those for minis? Or do you have suggestions for soft (not the traditional mesh) fly mask?

Thanks in advance,

Liz R.

I can't remember where your horse's wound is, but I had one bitten by a rattlesnake on the eyelid. The area was very swollen and drained drastically. I used the nylon mesh fly mask and it seemed fine. Of course, that is the area on the mask with the most room. I rinsed it out several times a day to get the blood and serum off, and I think he even liked it when I put it back on him cool and wet.

I have also used the Ozark Crusader with ears. You might consider that one if the wound is higher up on the head. The way the mask is shaped around the forehead might be better.

Good luck with the poor little girl.

I LOVE the Cashel Crusader masks! They are soft, fit well, and come with options like the long nose panel or ear protection so you can really cover up a sensitive horse.

I have the Lycra masks from Schneiders. They are soft but if you're using them out in a field or with other horses the Lycra will snag and tear. That's just the way the fabric is but it is very soft.

Thanks, guys for the suggestions!

I like the lycra mask, but it'll interfere with her cancer sores on her cheek and forehead. I checked out the Cashel crusader and they make something called "Quiet Ride" that looks good. They don't have mini sizes, but I found a pony size that I can adjust.

Thanks again for your help - you always have good suggestions!
