Just got off the phone with my son. I picked up the phone and said hello, I could hardly understand him. He had called earlier to say he and the family he went to Brown County State Park with were going horseback riding. I hesitated when he asked, he convinced me. So this time when he called and said horseback accident, with panic in his voice, my heart sunk, I just knew it was him.
It was one of those trail ride things. I tried to talk him out of it as it is freaking cold here and we are under a wind advisory. I do not have all the details just yet, he is unclear. There were he thinks 10 in the group,,,,,5 were the family he was with. Something blew down, across, in front of the lead horse, that horse pulled around to go back, the horse behind it was on a slope going down hill and that horse too turned to go back, but the turn and the slope combined caused the horse to slip, and the rider who is the Grandmother in the family he was with, went down. Brown County is a huge park, it took the rescuers an hour and a half to get to her as they were so far into the woods, it will take longer to get her out as they are doing it on foot and she is in very bad shape on a back board. He hadn't called till now as he was trying to help and stepped back when the rescuers arrived. He said she could not feel or move anything, heard one of the guys radio that they believed her lungs were punctured from broken ribs, also heard him say to have a helicopter waiting at a certain location where they would be coming out of the woods. When I was talking to him there was a ton of commotion in the background and it was hard to hear. He was walking back out with them.
Several of the other horses went in many directions, my sons horse took him through a branch, but he is fine except for a nasty scrape across his chest and neck. The EMTS were going to look at it once they got back and had Grandma taken care of but he assures me it is nothing.
My son has been very close to this family for years. Their son is his best friend, and like my son, he lost his father too.
Please keep all of them in your thoughts.
It's going to be a long night. Will update as I hear.
