For turnout which is better a gelding with a mare, or a gelding with a gelding?

i'm gonna be finding out very shortly! shortly, in more ways that one. i'm gonna go start a new thread so as not to hijack yours but suffice it to say, i'm hoping gelding/gelding/gelding is best! LOL

I think it really depends on the horse my geldings ( We have 12 minis here now and of those 4 are geldings) all go out with the mares/foals and it works just fine for us

I have geldings with geldings, geldings with a breeding stallion (just a 2yo now), and geldings w/ mares. Each group gets along very well.

We only have one gelding and he can be out with the stallions or the mares or he can be out with the stallion AND the mares and we havent has any problems with any of the situations..

Probably depends on the gelding but most of them get along with other horses it seems.

My gelding has been living in a herd of mares for the past year.. And they all get a long just fine.

I have a little of everything. I have geldings with mares and even a full grown stallion that is fine with geldings-all depends on the individual horse and the temperment of the "herd" as a whole also!

I have 2 geldings and a filly (soon to be mare age) and they are always together when they're outside and have never had any problems. Even now when my filly is having her heat issues everyone is getting along.

My two geldings are out with my mares, my stallions hate them and would fight them.

My gelding has been with my mares with no problems. We just recently got another gelding. I

put both of them together in a separate pasture to get the new boy introduced. They both seem

happier just being together as boys. LOL May just leave them alone without the girls causing problems for them. mary

I think it depends on the individual horse (gelding).

Just something else I've noticed w/ our horses is that the geldings seem to get the mares to be more active than they otherwise would be. It seems like at our house, the geldings that are in with mares will often instigate play where if just left alone, those mares would only hang around and shoot the breeze with each other all day :bgrin

We mostly have all geldings but I agree it depends on the horse and the personalities. You will get a lot of different answers.

Our show horse group is all turned out together, so we have a bunch of geldings turned out with a couple of mares. One of the mares is pretty much the boss of that group but they all get along well. Our horses share box stalls in the barn and I match them up with their personality and how they get along together and I have two "odd stall mates" a 37" gelding with a 28" gelding and a 38" gelding with a 31" mare but they get along perfectly and even feeding isn't a problem.

I turn out another 3 yr old gelding only with a one year old stallion who will be gelded soon. The older gelding does not play well with other horses (I don't think he was socialized at all as a baby) and if he is turned out with my other horses he jumps all over them and is constantly biting and bugging them and they tend to put up with his antics and then end up with bite marks and scratches and get really cranky. If that gelding pulls any of that with the one year old stallion, the stallion will not put up with it and will go after him and give it right back so they get along most of the time and the gelding is hopefully learning better manners because the stallion won't put up with his rough housing.

I also have a mini family that is pastured together, a stallion and two mares bred to him. He stays with the mares because he was pastured with mares year round his whole life and when I tried to separate him when I brought him home he was in an absolute panic and frantic to get back to his herd. One of the mares had a baby this year (our only baby) and the two mares and the stallion clearly share parenting duties and the stallion is very much the leader. I have found both mares asleep flat out on the ground while the baby is off with the stallion playing with him and climbing all over him. I was very worried about having a stallion, mares and a baby together but they are great and have a perfect herd dynamic going. If it is raining I've seen the stallion herd everyone in to their shelter and then stand out in the rain watching over them or acting like he is standing guard even though there is plenty of room for all of them inside. The baby will come out of that group when it is time to wean him and I will have to match him up with a buddy to keep him company. Maybe one of my more maternal older geldings.

My gelding is pastured with my breeding stallion and a yearling colt.

He doesn't get along with the mares isn't that strange? Maybe it is because the boys let him be the boss.

For the most part the geldings fit ok whereever here.

Our old (19) gelding is out with our filly. That was only after she got big enough to protect herself from his sometimes amorous attempts. Now she's the one that runs and darts at him making him jump and buck. The gelding and our stallion just won't get along and haven't since the stallion got old enough to fight back. When he was only 1 1/2 yrs old, the gelding pinned him in a corner of the stall and would not let him come out. Now the stallion would like to stomp a hole in the middle of the old man!

We have 10 geldings ranging in age from 3 to 11 and 3 yearling mares and 3 2 yr old mares. Each has it's own stall at night, but during the day, I let them all out into a large lot to play and they all get along fine together. I don't let the show horses out there during show season cause they tend to play a bit rough once in a while and I am afraid one will get a scar or something. You can bet that if any will get a scrape, it will be something I want to show even though nothing ever happens to anyone else. I have another gelding and two more mares that will probably go out with them in a couple of weeks after the last show.

Hi!

I don't do this every day, but 2-3 times a week while I'm cleaning pens I will turn all 4 of my yearlings out together to run around. One is a colt (he doesn't know he's a boy yet) the one's a gelding and then 2 fillies... and the girls are bossy so the boys know to leave them ALONE! And everyone runs around and has a blast..... a change of pace is nice for them.... otherwise I feed everyone seperate because they all eat at different paces and each get different quanities of food....

I have a gelding that for the most of it decides in the mornings when he's turnedout who he wants to hang with some mornings he can't get to the my only mare's pasture quick enough and then other mornings just walks away when he wants to stay with the stallion and gelded pony. I really just let him make up his mind but all of the horses get along with him. No fights or even fusses the mare runs her pasture one way and the stallion another way.
