This mare is sired by and black pinto and her dam is a chestnut appaloosa (though I do not know pattern.. Her name is HNFS Freckles if someone wants to look her up, I think she may have been double registered) Anywho.. Was wondering what the chance of her possibly carrying a hidden app gene would be or if it was even possible? All of her foals that I know of so far, with the exception of this year's filly, have been pinto sired by pinto and solid stallions.. She hasn't been crossed on an app stud yet, so was wondering if she could possibly be carrying a hidden app gene that would show when crossed on my pintaloosa stud and result in an appy foal.. Here's a photo of her, she has no appy characteristics whatsoever

No-would be the short answer!!!

That has to be one of the most "solid" mares I have seen for a long time!!!

No Appy.

No Pinto

Without any app characteristics, she will not have appy foals by non-appy studs. The foal would require an appy stud to pass on the Lp gene.

It IS possible she has a pattern gene to pass one... if that is the case, if a foal inherits Lp from the sire, but not a pattern gene from him, there'd still be a chance of the foal getting a PATN gene from her, and therefore having a pattern vs just having app characteristics. But there's no way to tell.

I have a pinto who is out of a solid and by a pinto stud. Her background is HIGHLY appy, but that doesn't mean a thing for her.. sure, she COULD be carrying a PATN gene, but I"ll never know (I do have an appy stallion, but he has a PATN gene, so if I bred them, if the foal got Lp from dad, and got a PATN gene, I"d never know which parent contributed it it... and it's likely she doesn't have a PATN gene)

YES she could produce an appy bred to a pintaloosa. The color would not come from her if she has no appy characterists it would come from the stallion. It does not take two appy's to produce appy color.

How old it the mare? If she is young she may still get color.

With characteristics she has the possibility of producing bred to a solid or pinto or appy.

With no characteristics she would have to be bred to an appy to have a chance of producing an appy.

Sorry- my screen is playing up since I installed some "upgrades" (Ha!!) and I only got half of the post- I now have all the post.

The mare does not appear to have ANY characteristics whatsoever- she is a solid bay.

ANY animals bred to a Pintaloosa may have a Pintaloosa, Appaloosa or Pinto foal without any input from the dam whatsoever.

I await any , part or all of the Pintaloosa Project research being proven, but it is still ALL theory.

This si NOT to denigrate in any way the HUGE amount of work and input that has gone into this project- all due respect to them, but please let us not get ahead of ourselves on this.
