Got any recipes for homemade dog food?

I have to put weight on this doggy so I'm going to cook for her.

I need something for Tracey with lots of protein and fat.

Any ideas?

My dog likes the leftover breakfast foods: eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, biscuits, cheese. Maybe you could make her a breakfast casserole!

Marty does Tracy not have digestive problems?? Couple with her being an older dog now, you need to be careful what you give her. I would not radically change any animals (or Humans) diet, so go easy. Eggs are not good for animals (they are not as good as thought for humans either, a lot cannot digest them, I for one!!) Cooked they are OK but still not really good. You need lots of vegetables, only blanched, not cooked down, and she probably will not eat them. What does she actually like eating?? Also, you need to talk to your Vet before changing her diet, an elderly GSD is not a breed I'd mess around with lightly.

My pups always loved my homemade lamb & rice. Buy a "cheap" cut of lamb. Boil it til very tender. Then add lots of rice and a package of frozen mixed vegetables after shredding the meat. If you need to you can always "thicken" it by adding dry dog food. You can add some garlic for flavor (no salt). I always made a big pan, then refrigerated and even froze the extra. Vet said this was a very good alternative to the canned lamb and rice food and lamb and rice is good for the heart and digestive system.

After some really less than desirable side affects I never give my dogs any kind of pork, and eggs are really bad for them.

I feed a food called Innova made by Natura. My dogs love it, its one of them good kind of foods with healthy stuff and NOT cheap. Anyway yesterday I saw a new line of their product called “EVO†it has no grain in it of any kind the fat is 22% and the protion a whopping 42%. Suppose to be made with raw ingredients or something. I picked up a sample bag and my Poms love it.

I’m not to sure if I would feed anything with that high a protein for any length of time, but what do I know.

My vet is the one that suggested that I cook for Tracey since she hates everything that I buy for her. We just came from there. She's lost a lot of weight again because she is protesting the dog food yet again dispite that I have much to choose from here. Yea she's spoiled. She wants people food. She wants me to cook for her and that's a compliment cause no one else in this house does.

He said to go online for some high fat dog food recipes so that's why I'm asking. She really wants to go to every drive-thru in Dunlap there is. So we did hit McDonalds on the way home. She will not eat veggies, but she could live on 6 Big Mac's easily per day if she had her way. Right now she's eating the pork chops that was supposed to be fore Sunday night's dinner. oh me........please no lectures. Just recipes. She needs to gain weight really bad. She looks like an orphan or something.

Marty: Whenever I notice my Vizsla looking a little thin I pour white gravy over his dry dog food. He will eat every bite. I use the kind that comes in a package and is bacon flavored. I get 2 meals out of 1 package. Seems to really help him put on the weight and his ribs don't show. You could probably fix it yourself, I just like things quick so I use the package.

you know I give my dog our older pit bull (he is about 13 years old now) He gets baby food he is losing a bit of weight and is getting a bit picky and a bit senile sometimes he just forgets to eat

so I put him aside and give him baby food mixed in with his dog food and some plain rice and boiled chicken

of course allthe dogs also eat tons of people food can you say spoiled

Marty, when I run out of dog food and dont want to run back to the store my dogs think they have died and gone to heaven. Here is what I do

I cook a big pan of rice and put some chicken in it, (I always have a bag of frozen chicken parts of some kind) and some frozen veggies in, they especially love carrrots, and I usually stir in a couple eggs but now I wont, I didn't know they were bad for dogs, the dogs drive me nuts until it cools down enough for them to eat it and they love it.

When our dog used to get picky about eating, sometimes it was due to tapeworms. I would never really see evidence but we would worm him and then his appetite would increase.

Also, have you ever considered a raw diet? Don't do it on your own but you can check out some websites. It's called the BARF diet. My dogs did GREAT on it!!!!

This is a diet recommended by my vet (minus the vegies) when my dog has tummy troubles, they love it. Also adding some cottage cheese is a good source of calcium and protein which my dogs love!

I have three yorkies. 2 are very senior and one is 1 year old. They are very picky eaters but love this.

2 cans diced carrots(drained) 2 bags of brown rice, cooked. 2 boxes of perdue ready cuts chicken, regular flavor, chopped finely, I use a food processor. This feeded my three little ones for a week. It is low residue which the two old ladies need.

I think MOST times, a quality commercial dog food is the way to go, but I know that Tracey's case is an exception.

If I were cooking for her, what I would fix would be chicken breasts (skinned and de-boned -- or maybe with some or all skin since you're wanting more fat in it) in the crock pot. I'd cook some rice for her in chicken broth and also open a can of green beans and mix it all together.

Also, maybe chop up some boiled eggs for her, or scrambled eggs.

From what I have seen, MOST dogs will eat and like green beans even if they are not veggie eaters. They do usually like green beans (canned, not fresh or frozen).

We had a dog that had been Posined with Antifreeze! After he pulled through which was amazing! He would not eat the speical food that he had to eat for the rest of his life so my vet gave me a vitatman suplement and we made him Chicken and rice with the suplement and that is alll HE would eat!!

Just an idea!

Chicken and Rice is good, or pasta, brown bread is better than white, but both are grist to the mill, let it go stale and it takes the place of biscuit. I would not skin the chicken- we do this as we do not want the fat, a bit of animal fat will be good for Tracy's digestive system and her waist line!! ( Rice is better than pasta as pasta is just basically wheat flour and eggs!!) Veggies are of little use to dogs, especially cooked, and Tracy does not need and "padding" in her food. Does she like potatoes?? Very under valued, the good old potato.

When I was in Colorado (lived there for 3 years), I had a friend that always baked an extra potato for the dogs. They loved them.

Here is a recipe I ran across that I am going to try on one of our dogs that I have trouble keeping weight on.

Fatten Up

5 # Ground Chuck

10 Egg Yolks

5 C Wheat Germ

5 C Old Fashion Oats

10 Envelopes Unflavored Gelatin

1/2 C Oil (Peanut or Olive)

1/2 C Black Strap Molasses

MIX ALL THE INGREDIENTS WELL....MAKE MEAT BALLS THE SIZE OF A NICKEL AND FREEZE. Use as needed for Treats, Bait or for Weight Gain.
