I’d thought I’d start a thread on the GREAT (or not so great ) things people have said to you when you are out with your ponies.

Today I was out walking all 4 of my little boys in the neighborhood when an elderly lady shouted out to me, “You have a beautiful family!!” Awe, made my heart melt

Yesterday I passed a man in the park walking his dog. He looked at me and said, “Nice dog!” I looked at him and said, “Nice horse!”

Once when we were at a show and had two young horses of similar coloring stalled together people kept asking us, "Oh! How cute! Are they TWINS?"

I was in a parade with Dapper Dan. It was hot and I was wearing a large straw sun hat. A smart alec in the crowd yelled "that horse makes your hat look big".

We were doing a small local trick and behavior show....One of the spectators comes up and says: "What are you going to do with those things. They can't do anything!"

(We were the only minis...The rest were 'big horses')

He didn't realize that my boys were the stars of the show for half of the demonstrations (jumping onto platforms 100% of their height - in tandem!, jumping into the back of a pickup truck - in tandem!, walking a balance beam, taking bows, playing kickball...and more.

He was honest enough to come back up to me afterword singing their praises

The two most common things we hear when taking our boys for a walk around our neighborhood....

1) Can we come pet them?
2) OMG, I can't believe they give kisses!!! (after we have the boys give them a kiss)

I showed a woman a clip of me in my new Aerocrown cart driving Rocko and she said "oh, it looks like he is pulling a wheelchair."
What?!! Ok, whatever.

And for the thousandth time I tell myself; Do. Not. Talk. to non horsey people about your horses!

Most common reaction for people when I tell them my horses are miniature horses:

Person: "Wow ! they are cute ponies! "

I then explain for the 100th time that they are NOT ponies. They are tiny, miniature, small, mini (you name it) horses.

Person: "Oh, I see... How big will they grow ?"

Me:

Another time, two of my mini mares were out to pasture with the Arabian gelding I used to have.

A construction worker sees them and asks me if the "big horse" (my Arabian) was the mother of the two "babies"(the two mini mares) with "her".

I was driving my little horse in a neighborhood and a concerned lady came out to the curb to ask how old my little horse was. I told her he was nine years old. I think she thought I was driving a foal...

After walking two of my boys in the park, I decided to cross the street and take them for a walk in the small town square of Glen Rose. A lady came up to me and asked, “What are you doing here?” I looked at her and asked, “Well, what are YOU doing here?”

I can’t correct people for calling my minis “ponies”, I call them Ponies myself. I refer to them as Ponies as an loving nickname. I also call my 16hh Quarter horse “Pony”. I don’t have any true ponies here though. Just like my dog Lacy, I call her Pup or Puppy and she is definitely not a puppy.

Now if someone were truly interested in miniature horses I would tell them about the breed and the differences between them and ponies, but that doesn’t happen too often.

Yep. I've had this before and it's not fun... I usually tell them: "I have miniature horses for the same reason some people choose to have chihuahuas."

I have had more than one person look from Rowan to me and back again and ask me how far I ride him. My response is usually, I probably wouldn't smash him flat if I sat on him, but he's not a riding horse, he pulls a cart and goes hiking with me. And usually they say ah, hmm.

I've had Chihuahuas for even longer than I've had miniature horses.
