I have bought a 7 month old mini colt, he's really sweet and friendly but he nips. He's still staying at his breeders house for a little while longer but I've been out to visit him a couple times. His nipping is not mean and it dosn't hurt but it can be annoying and I don't want it to get it out of hand. What his breeders have been doing to stop him from doing this is slapping him in the face (not very hard). But I've heard that doing that can make them head shy and I dont want that. I'm thinking if I got him gelded that might help. But does anyone have any ideas for training him not to nip? This is going to be my first horse and I want to do things right.

I've heard that you "flick" them on the nose...no hits. My little 3 week old filly's teeth are just coming out and she's mouthy on everything! It was cute when she didn't have teeth, but now we have to start disciplining. Look at how the Mom's discipline. They nip them on the rear end.

They all tend to nip at some point

: When mine do it, I give them a swift tap on the chin from underneath so as not to make them head shy, but very importantly, pet them straight after when they stop so rewarding the good behaviour! Hope this helps.
