I am pretty clueless about technological stuff, so thought that maybe someone who knows a bit more than me could help...

I am moving at the end of the month, and need to set up internet - In the past I've had cable, but DSL is way cheaper, and also you get a free iPod for signing up!! (yes, I am swayed by these gimmicks! lol).

I am wondering if DSL is fast enough. It is 1.5MB and cable is 5MB (or 7, but I would just order the 5). Has anyone had both, to compare? Am I going to notice that DSL is significantly slower if I get it? I don't play online games or anything like that, but I need my connection to be fast enough to download lots of music.

Thanks for any info!

I'm pretty clueless about these things also, but for what it is worth, we live out in the middle of nowhere and haven't even been able to get on line until a few months ago because all the access numbers were a long distance call. We just got DSL in our area and have had it hooked up about 4 months. I just love it. It is even faster than my work. I have never had to wait for more than a few seconds for anything---even great long emails with 10 or 15 photos attached. I have never downloaded music with it yet, but we get everything else in a flash. Nothing I have done to this point has taken longer that a few seconds. I seem to recall that there are different levels of DSL speed. You might ask about that before you get it. It seems like for a few dollars a month more, we could get it even faster. I think that is what we went for. Good luck! Linda

I am wondering just if that is the true speed at which you have been connecting to the Internet? I have checked into a few things and this is what I have found out on Cable Modem verses DSL

Many cable companies and Internet service providers argue that cable modems are as much as 100 times faster than a dial-up Internet connection, running at an ultra-fast speed of 5 million bits per second (mbps). In theory, it's possible. But a more realistic speed is 1 mbps, or about 20 times faster than a typical 56,000-bits-per-second (kbps)dial-up connection.[/quote]
Speed Check

Here is a site where you can really get a True test of just How fast you are connecting it takes just a few seconds to complete~!

Most High Speed is no more then 1.5 at the High End..And also PAYING for it at the High End.. I am at 675Kbps..on the lower end of pricing..But if I wanted to get up to 1.5 it would cost me 3 times more per Month also...So Check the Pricing for the Different speeds available for DSL High Speed Internet EVEN Satellite at its Fastest and Higher end is only at 1.5 mbps and that costs Way more then on the lower end of speed..In Other words the Faster you get the More you Pay~! So I really have a problem with 5mbps on a Cable Hook up.... Maybe you do get it but I sure would want to see what a Speed test Is like to get the numbers of what really is the speed I am sorry but that 5 is almost unbelievably fast in todays hook ups.. Here is the Pricing from a Sat company on Speeds and even Sat does not got that fast..

Price $49.95 per month $69.95 per month $79.95 per month

Up To 512 Kbps.... Up To 1.0 mbps..... Up To 1.5mbps

But yes even 1mbps second is fast and will work for you just fine...Or as I am at close to 700 is just fine also..
