Does anyone who has insurance on their horses recommend a company and give me an idea of what it costs to carry insurance? I'm looking for something that will cover mortality, loss of use, and major surgeries.

Thanks

i use Gencorp. The agents name is Christine. All their policies cover mortality, theft and colic ins. YOu get half the value of the policy for colic surgery etc. You can also add a rider to stallions in case they lose fertility. No vet check required unless the horse was sick in the past.

So say you ins a horse for 3500.00 then you get 1750.00 in surgery costs. I think the site is gencorp.com

Good Morning,

Horse Insurance Specialist is who I have been using for years. They also carry Liability Insurance on our Club shows, and in case you can't get homeowner, farm & ranch coverage with your standard carrier they carry all lines. Very reasonable and have a rating of A+ in the insurance field and they do insure all over the US.

Just be careful though because colic surgery can be A LOT more expensive than those figures above. I feel colic surgery is the biggest medical expense risk facing my horses, but for an extra $250, I feel the major medical is a good purchase since with young horses going to shows and under that type of stress, things can sometimes happen.

i agree jill but at least its something and its not an extra charge you just automatically get it. Tinys surgery at osu in Jan was 2100.00

I think it varies a lot maybe depending on where you live. It as a little over $5k for little miss Khaki 3 years ago. Hers was at Blue Ridge Equine Hospital right near Charlottesville, VA.

And, I did remember who insured Khaki back then (was happy with them). It was AgriRisk.

I am looking for a new insurance company now and found one who for there mortality even a 3000.00 policy or there Minimum whatever ..

offers a FULL 3000.00 in colic surgery along with your mortality policy not a portion of it but the full 3000. that is a great option for those that dont want the added expense of surgical but still want to get come coverage.

The company is called Equisport and so far seems to be the best out of all the ones I have called.

now that is a good deal! do you have to do a vet exam?? also does that also include smaller policies?

Yes I thought it was a great deal as well and I asked more then a few times and in several different ways to make sure I totally understood what she was saying. I even had a friend call and yep it is automatic full 3000 in coverage with there mortality policy.

A min policy for one mini would be 125.00 per year for I believe that was a 3500 value we were discussing I cant find my notes right now but I surely will be going with them.

no vet check required for a horse valued at I think up to 12,000 maybe even higher I am not positive on that one.

I think it was either Agri risk or Horse Insurance Specialist that required a vet exam on ALL minis no matter what the value.

Thank you, everyone .. I'll look into these!

I only need a 3 month policy to cover a leased horse for a few month, so hopefully will not cost a whole lot.
