Coming from the mini world, I am used to the cable and California style show halters. What does everyone use for their ponies - bridle (what kind of bit?) or halter and where can you find them?

Thanks!

Hi Denise,

If you go to Prime Design Tack, they have some shetland bridles that they have just started making. They used Tom Shipley's 20 year old shetland bridle as their model, and they are nice. I think they use anything from a regular snaffle to a curb bit(can't remember though). We use the arab cable halters on our shetlands and still win aginst the ones wearing bridles. It just depends on what you like and what your horse looks good in.

Amanda is right. I show my foundation classics in the cable halters. I think maybe the moderns use mare bridles. I know Doc Taylor does.

Moderns show with a tailer....person behind with a whip . Foundations and classics dont. They sort of drive them up into the bridle and shows their movement better.

Any halter you use on a mini to show you can also use on a Classic or Foundation to show. As Lyn said, Moderns are generally shown in bridles. There are regulations as to what type of bit depending on sex so if you plan on showing a Shetland in a bridle be sure you read the rulebook first!

They are usually single bit one rein headstalls. some moderns are also shown with the tails in cruppers. Go to AMHR web site and order a vhs tape on showing your pony. There is a great one on showing and training the modern pleasure pony done by Marvin McCabe and Abby Taylor Smith. I have it and it is excellent. Talks about everything from grooming to presenting.

Thanks for the info... we have a Modern mare in foal arriving on Monday and I think Santa will need to add some tack under the tree for mama and baby!
