I'm having a bad day. I want to cut back some but don't even know where to start. I'd like to sell non essential horses but don't even know where to start.

First you have to make the decision to sell. I too had to make that decision and I would keep changing my mind as to whom to sell. Look at your herd and decide which horses you need to keep. And like I said you will keeping chaning your mind. But once you have decide it is easier. Do I always worry about the horses I sell - if to people I know and see often - no. But if to strangers - yes. My minis are my life and I value each one. But as you state you are expecting 6 foals next year - I am expecting 11. And I needed to start making room now. Just know by having difficulity with this tells me that you love your horses and want the best for them and that will be your guide.

Taking it from what you said - you want to sell the non essentials - then you are the only one that can decide which are essential and which aren't.

It's easy to say treat it like a business, and make the decision from that, but that is hard to do, at least for me!

We're reducing our herd number, slowly. To good homes and/or those that I know I can let almost any of my horses go, but I have a hard time with anything else! I'm delivering one on Sunday to the other end of California - it's hard and I'm chosing not to think about it. Otherwise I'll want to cancel the deal!

It helps if you know exactly how many minis you want to have and that you are comfortable keeping. If the number is 5, 14 or 60, you can work from that.

I would first figure how many horses total, then deduct the number of 'absolutely cannot be sold for whatever reason' ones. This will leave you with a number to work with in deciding where to make cuts in your herd.

I tend to take out ones that I have to many from the same line, example a mare and I have three daughters. Two from that group of four can go, depending on the sire, which ones have the specific usefulness to me, which one I can't sell (usually my older mares!) will decide which go - usually the youngest ones!

I wish I could cull like some people can, Alas, I can on paper or in my head, but not in my heart!

Good luck.

I also wanted to cut the numbers some here and got so lucky. It turned out a friend of mine wanted a mini or two to keep her mini gelding company. So, I free leased her two of my mares. I still have a say regarding them, can get them back if I want (but I don't plan to) and they are not very far from me.

Is there a chance you might be able to free lease some of them, like I did or maybe to some kids you know through 4H? It can work out really well because you get to keep tabs on them. If you sell, then your say so is over.
