Not what you have bought in foal.

What foals where bred and born on your farm

How many of your foals born on your place?

How many foals have you kept?

Why did you keep them?

18 foals in around 8 years.

Kept back 2 mares for our breeding program.

Wanted our name on our foals.

This was our plan from the beginning and finally there.

What about you?

I want to say I personally bred for 6. Didn't keep any of them, 1 died due to being a preimie. Three I sold due to I wouldn't breed them considering their sire threw dwarfs and he was gelded, but 1 was really nice but was afraid she may go over 38" and the other was presenting stifle issues, the other I wouldn't have considered a show horse so I basiclly sold them as pets. One I gave away because of conformation issues that both parents never presented. Probably my first one that I sold I still regret. I don't even know what she looks like as full grown. She was a honery thing, thats why her name was Diva. Me and her never clicked so I sold her, I would like to think she could have made a really nice Western horse but I'll never know. Just like her dam I wish I never sold her but I was dispersing but I think she could have made a nice western horse and this foal's sire is my National Champion Western.

I have bred 4. My only filly died at 9 days. The next colt was placed in a pet home. The third is here, was shown at one show this year and will be shown next year and possibly gelded to continue showing as a sr gelding in 2013. The fourth is here and will either be our yearling colt or yearling gelding showing next year. Haven't sold anything.

had 4 babies born here, sold 2, havent decided if I am keeping the other 2 yet

Our breeding operation was very uneducated. We didn't know what was going on until about 2007-2008 and we did not have the know how or space to separate. Many of our mares and stud didn't sell until 2010-2011.

All of these foals were sired by one single stud. Four mares produced dwarves. (one 3 times, one twice, two once)

You guys all know that I am VERY open about our past endeavors in breeding. It was VERY heartbreaking and we shed MANY tears and it cost us lost of money in vet bills. My family and I have learned a lot of about breeding and dwarves (more about dwarves then anything else). I personally regret never gelding our stud or any of the colts we sold.

So, this is the very sad overview of the pain our foals, mares, and what we've gone through out of stupidity and lack of effort.

I have fought many people about my horses on the internet and have never lied when it comes to this. I have always been truthful in in the history of my mares, foals, and stud. I post this so people will be educated and see that we are learning and have changed. A lot of people didn't see that in 2010 when my filly Connor was born. I was persecuted for telling the honest truth.

I post this because I know now that we were very stupid and so that I can say that we are stud free and have gelded our two homebred colts. We own three dwarves and are very proud of them.

I am probably the most honest ex-breeder you'll ever meet.

Had 5 born, 4 fillies and a stud colt. We will be showing the four fillies as they were all very nice. Haven't really tried to sell any of them, though we did try to sell a yearling colt, now gelded.

We only bred two mares for next year as I don't like to go over a certain amount of horses until we can sell some. I am also getting pickier about finding homes for the ones available for sale. Takes much longer but is more rewarding when you know they probably won't face the horror so many others will.

Though I would LOVE to do more breeding and am really excited about the nice quality in this year's foal class--which was a result of acquiring some better stock 2-3 years ago--I just can't justify unlimited breeding in this market. I feel as though I brought them into the world and I have some level of responsibility around their life. We haven't done much selling in the last couple of years, but had a couple of bad experiences and I just want to try and find better situations for the horses. And, until I do, I will keep feeding them. Feed and lead.....they aren't a pure commodity to me I guess.

This also could lead us into more performance type of showing. Perhaps get into some therapy type of work or something similiar. So there is an up side here--(though I would still love to have 5 nice halter babies every year, believe me...)

What honesty, would you feel comfortable telling us the dwarfs bloodlines.

Not too many would do this for one reason or another.

Understand if wish not too. Very hard to be so up front.

Thank you so so much.

).

1 foal from purchased pregnant mare, preemie and passed at 24 hours old.

3 mares exposed for spring 2012 foals, we'll see how it goes.

Now I do find this educational, and some or more have some of these bloodlines.

thanks again.

Yep. My horses have a lot of the older bloodlines (Bond and Dent excluded)

I'd be interested in knowing whether or not Gold Melody Boy produced direct carriers (grandchildren or direct offspring) because I would LOVE to have a mare with him up close. My stud had him further back and I'm hoping that other horses brought the gene in.

Our first breeding was in 2003.

We have had 5 fillies and finally this year had the colt we were waiting for.

All of them live with us with the exception of one small filly that my girlfriend

fell in love with and had to have. So we gave it to her. She has the kind of home

you dream of, if you'd be selling.

Ooops forgot the why.

We've kept them because we love them. My biggest fear is if I sold, not being able to find the home like my friend gave our one filly.

We showed the first two born fillies, once. They became so ill, with terribly high fevers, that we gave that up. No ribbon was worth their health and well-being.

They are just lovely pasture potatoe's and don't seem to mind

a bit.

we have sold 14 as weanlings since 2005

7 fillies and 7 colts

mares bought in foal = 2 colts & 1 filly (2005 - 2006)

our own breeding= 6 fillies & 5 colts (2007 - 2010)

retained 1 2005 colt from a mare we bought in foal(Smokin)and showed him for 3 yrs in PtHA shows

where he did very well. we wanted to keep him as a stallion but he got taller than we wanted for our program so reluntantly sold him, As he was a beautiful black homozygous for tobiano pinto. And my good buddy
default_sad.png

We also kept 1 2008 filly (Spice) who is now part of our broodmare herd after a successful show career of many Grand Championships and Top Ten Futurity 2 yr old at AMHR Nationals. We actually kept her as she was sick when she was born (anhidrosis) and we got too attached, so glad we did
default_biggrin.png

We have 1 mare vet checked in foal for 2012 and awaiting results on another, so maybe 2 for 2012.

We didn't breed any mares for 2011 - missing those little hooves this year,

but we have 1 mare vet checked in foal for 2012 and awaiting results on another, so maybe 2 for 2012.

I must add something for Tremor here.

I first met her on other forums, when she was breeding dwarfs. She truly wasn't aware of what she was doing. Unlike many who ask for advice on forums, but become upset when advised, Tremor took what was offered and ran with it. She stopped breeding and when I invited her here, was a member within the day. She has been up-front with her past mistakes and never lied about it. I am pretty sure that Tremor is a great deal younger than I and I do not know her personally. I doubt I ever will. However, I have always been very proud of her, for taking advice given by many and doing the right thing by the breed.

Way to go Tremor.

Lizzie

We started breeding in 2007

2008

1 pinto filly (kept til yearling, then sold, now a driving mare)

2009

2 fillies; 1 solid, 1 pinto (both sold)

1 pinto colt (now gelded and showing local and trick trained)

1 cremello colt born from bred mare when purchased (kept for future stallion)

2010

1 pinto filly from bred mare when purchased (sold)

1 pinto colt mare sold bred so not born here

2011

1 mare aborted pinto filly 7 months along (normal looking)

1 mare aborted pinto filly at 6 weeks to go due to cord wrapped around its neck

1 pinto filly (sold day she was born)

1 solid filly form bred mare when purchased (sold at 6 weeks old will be shown)

1 pinto colt (sold with solid filly, will be gelded and shown)

all in all our pinto stallion has sired 9 foals, 7 being fillies and only 1 solid, 2 aborted, 7 alive now. No dwarves, no bad conformation foals. We have only kept one foal, from outside mare. All our stallion's foals sell easily.

To answer the question posted here I would need to go back to many logs and check, can't even guess after two decades. I can say I've retained 12, some for showing some for breeding, even though I haven't bred anything for over two years becuase there are too many out there. The economy is also bad, and vet fees are too high for me to spend any more money on dystocias and even well foal care. Maybe things will change in the future, don't see it coming anytime soon. Right now there are hundreds of adds just on this forum, and plenty more on other sites, not to mention Chances has too many to adopt out. I know our local rescue has too many, I can't add to that. I know, I know, some are out to make big bucks, it's just a business to them, but my heart is in it. I also believe if you can't show it, don't breed it.

Ive had 8 foals. 5 fillies and 3 colts. Have kept 2 lovely fillies and one colt as a future sire. Sold 2 fillies together, two colts together and one colt has just sold with his gelded sire.
default_smile.png
I love sending them off in pairs I guess.

Tremor is awesome!
