I have been dreading this ever since he got a motorcycle again a few months ago.

So the night before last he was late coming home....I did not want him to ride that day but he did not want to listen at all. I knew something was wrong, but not what.

So he comes home and says... I had an accident on Cornelius Pass rd. Bloody wonderful....He was going to fast around one of the corners on a wet road and went right over and slid a bit. Am just so very glad there wasn't a semi truck coming around that corner at that moment in time. The Semi wouldn't of been able to stop.

Even with a Full helmet, Body armour, heavy gloves and leather boots.

He has broken two ribs, tore up his shoulder and hurt his knee and leg.......

Am really upset...we can't afford for him to get hurt, he is the only one that can work. But the most important thing is I do not want him to be hurt.

I am not supposed to drive at all because of my knee...but I did anyway. Took him to St Johns Hopsital's ER. I was seeing stars of pain because of having to drive, but he was in no condition to do so.

Had to take him back over the next day so they could check on him.

Why are men so brain dead? So like what is wrong with driving a car? At least in a car you can some padding if something goes wrong.

Lets just say that Motorcycle is going to get sold one way or another. I can't afford him getting hurt again.... Men!

Ouch, for both of you!!! I hope he heals quickly and remembers WHY it happened

This is such a hard issue. Steve is a dirtbike fanatic, always has been, always will be. He has little life insurance at this time and no long term care or disability insurance. That will change. Not only am I insisting on coverage for him with Mia and I as beneficiaries, but a policy with his Mother as beneficiary too. She's elderly and deserves that measure of security, just in case. Until now he's had no need for additional coverage, but things are changing
smile.gif
I'll also add an additional policy with him as beneficiary, after we marry.

I want to start riding (three day eventing) again and I have already have a big insurance policy on myself, with my sister as executor on Mia's behalf. I don't plan to shoot for the Olympics, but competitive riding might not be out of sight.

If grownups are going to do risky things, they should be prepared for the consequences, life insurance, disability insurance, long term care coverage, wills & living wills are just part of that. We're grownups with people who depend on us. We should be responsible enough to step up and be grownups about it...end of rant...well, almost...

Live your passions yes, but also make sure that your passion for WHATEVER does not endanger your family's future security...

OMG!! He's lucky that he isn't hurt even worse (or dead!) I hate motorcycles-- sure they are fun to drive, but only until they crash.

I'm so sorry, and I do hope that he does sell that thing. Tell him you prefer him in one piece!

Ouch! That is a BAD road, that Cornelius Pass. I am glad he was not injured even worse since there is quite a bit of traffic on it.

Please accept my condolences for the injury/bike. I know how you feel.

Shari, I'm sorry your hubby had an accident!!! I'm glad he was not too seriously injured!!!

My hubby drives a motorcylce in the warmer weather, too. Surprisingly, I don't worry about him on his motorcycle, even though a close friend of my MIL's just died on one earlier this month.

I'm kinda with Laura on this one, if you have the financial future covered, if you HAVE to do it, do it. Some people HAVE to do things or little pieces of them die. Hubby is one of those. He's covered, bigtime.

Hope your hubby is back to 100% soon and you be sure not to take on too much!!!

Thanks everyone.... really hard dealing with this.

We are not covered enough... if something happens to Hubby, we are toast!

Have life insurance on him, but not nearly enough for this day in age.

Guess I will have to wait until he is healed and see about getting more life insurance and disability insurance too.

You are right Liz, that pass is not a safe place to ride a motorcycle. But the only way Hubby can get to work.

He is a sweet man but can get bit too cocky at times, not a good mix with a motorcycle. Sigh ~ ~

I know he loves his motorcycle but I don't know if I can take or handle him riding it again.

He does like other things like Skeet shooting and such. Rather have his hobby be skeet shooting. Much more safe.

When we met I knew Steve was a dirtbike fanatic. Now I know it's even more than an obsession, it's part of his soul and his identity. You should see him ride...wow!

I'd never ask him to give that up, even if it terrifies me, but I will ask that he protect our future. I expect him to make sure I do the same.

Oh, Shari...I hate hearing this! I'm SO glad he wasn't hurt worse! If you need any further transport, CALL ME!! I am so close, and you certainly don't need that sort of pain.

I know well how bad Cornelius Pass Road can be, as I spun out on the "BIG" turn in our little truck -- it had just rained after a dry spell and we had no weight in back and the truck broke loose...somehow "turn into the spin" had become ingrained in my mind, and I reacted properly and regained control, but YIKES...if I hadn't. I shook the rest of the way home...

I understand the excitement of motorcycles, but they scare the you-know-what out of me. Thankfully Keith agrees with me, but we both worry when Daryl (BigDogs&LittleHorses) comes over here on his motorcycle, especially with our rough gravel road and driveway...

...of course, I worry when Keith goes off on his mountain bike!

Shari, I know how you feel, hubby is REALLY into sport bikes and has a shop, plus another job and I cannot work. Sooooo he has disablility insurance that covers a bike accident.

I LOVE that he rides and he is pretty dadgum good at it. I do not worry about him wrecking, but someone else hitting him. I could no sooner ask him to stop riding, than for he to ask me to sell my horses. Just wont happen.

For both of your peices of mind ( now that just doesnt sound right LOL) your hubby should really look into going to a track day or 10. Its where a bike club will rent a race track and then have sessions. It is THE best place to learn how to ride. odd to say , but a person that has only ridden streets, doesnt 'really' know how to ride safely. They do not know their limits nor those of the bike.

Youre in a tough pickle, I truly understand your desire for him to sell. And I do understand the love of bikes. I would still ride one if I could.

You both need to sit down, calmly and discuss this. Explain how you feel, let him explain and go from there. If he decides to keep it make sure he has dissability insurance that will cover the bike AND look into those track days. They arent cheap, but they are SO very much worth it.

best of luck! Heather

I 'm sorry this happened and he was injured and hopefully he will heal quickly. That is such a terrible road, and in the rain too...I used to do ride-alongs with an ambulance company there in North Portland and we were called to a motorcycle accident on Cornelius Pass Rd in the middle of the night. The young man had taken one of those corners at near 100mph and slid off the side of the road. We transported him to OHSU and he was very combative. He was actually eluding the police when it happened so they came to his hospital room while we were there to make sure he didn't leave. He was in pretty bad shape with many injuries however, none life threatening. I think the bigger pain was going to come in the form of thousands of dollars in fines and possible jail time the officers said he had coming. Hopefully a lesson learned.

Thanks so much for the Offer Susanne. Might have to take you up on it later next week.

Me Driving Hubby with this leg has set me back quite a bit. No way I can drive. Sigh ~~~

He used to ride Dirt bikes when he was a teen, though with the stories I have been told is it a wonder he lived through it. When he was in the Navy he was required to take a Motorcycle safety course on base and they were tough courses.

But that was a longgg time ago.

I might let him ride in a years time but only if, one he gets enough insurance to cover our family. Second he must take and complete another Motorcycyle safety course.

I know I sound demanding but he knows I love him a lot and that he had better get his act together.

He is the only one in the family that can work. Because of my health problems there is no way I could work. Which makes it very scary when he goes and does not so smart things.

He had a problem 2 years ago after his dad died and his mother went off the deep end. Because of that problem he sold his Motorcycle back then, he had no other choice.

I gave in a few months ago and let him get another one...and we made a deal if he could keep out of trouble he can have another bike. Well not to impressed at him hurting himself within three months of owning this bike.

Big Sigh ~ ~

He is a sweet man very kind and helpful but sometimes I wonder. Or is it all Men do not so smart things???

Yikes... not good.

Cornelius Pass is a fun twisty ride, but does not get much sunlight so the road surface is often damp and this time of year there is leaf slime. Leaf slime is worse than gravel

With those crotch rockets (sport bikes) it must be so tempting to push it. That's why I have a cruiser. Based on my observations, I'd say about 2/3 of sport bike riders are riding at illegal speeds and performing illegal maneuvers in and out of traffic. Some of them are just riding in shorts! The police up here are always after them. I think they should be banned from the streets.

There is only so much you have control over when you ride. It is exilerating and at the same time it is the definition of vulnerability. There is loose gravel, dogs, oil spills, leaves, and worse of all auto drivers not paying attention and many other things that you just have no control over.

Every time I think I might sell my bike I take it for a ride and then remember how great it feels.

But it is a gamble.

So thankful it wasn't worse. I've seen some pretty bad spills from motorcycles. Gosh, he was lucky. Holding you both in hugs and prayers.

Second he must take and complete another Motorcycyle safety course.

If the person has been riding any amount of time, these courses are pretty useless. To really learn what he and his bike can handle he needs to do a trackday at a race track. They have different levels and for first timers they teach them how to ride the track, how to handle proper braking, cornering and speeds.

Its like taking a person that has only ridden ( horses) in an arena for decades, then putting them out on some mountain trail. While they know how to ride, that trail is still going to teach them. Same thing w/the trackdays.

I have heard so very often comments from guys about how they know how to ride and dont need a track day. Then they go and say 'wow, I had NO idea how badly I ride'.

Shari I'm so sorry that you had to go through this and glad that it wasn't more serious than it was. My gosh, you've got to get it through his head that you need him alive and well! What is it with these men and some of their boy toys????

Race car worries over here all the time. But boy, do they ever love to race...

Little Dan drug home a dirt bike in September through one of his many wheels and deals.......the you know what hit the fan.......trust me. Even the boys on these four wheers scare me to pieces, and now I have one with a real driver's licesense .

I hope you can convince hubby to sell it. Tell him that there's nothing more reliable than a woman's instinct. Cause that's the truth.
