I posted on here earlier that I was thinking of getting a puppy. I have looked for info for a couple years and have been talking to a breeder I have liked for a few months. She let me know when she had a nice litter of mini aussies. She had me come out and meet all of the doggie family, and I was hooked. I get her next weekend. She is a beautiful red tri little girl.

Right after I committed to getting a puppy for me, we lost our big aussie/newfoundland that we had for 14 years. He developed cancer in his jaw bone. He was my sons dog. So it has taken a little bit to rebound from that loss to make sure we were ready for a new family member.

I got her bowls, She needs leashes and collar, and a crate to train her. And some chew toys. Anything else I should look into? Thanks for the help! Haven't had a puppy since my then fiance bought me my springer spaniel puppy almost 25 years ago!

Kim and family congratulations on the addition of your new fur friend. Sounds like you have the basics for the new baby. You could always take a trip to Petco or Petsmart and buy one of everything like we do, lol.

Congratulations on the new puppy. I want a mini Aussie, so bad. Be sure to share pics when she arrives. [i lost my black-tri standard Aussie girl last October.]

On the puppy chew toys, avoid rawhide til they are at least 6 months old, they can't digest it, so it usually just makes them sick; go with safe puppy chew toys like Nylabone (my dog liked the chicken flavor). Sounds like you have the other necessities figured out.

Dont buy puppy pee pee pads.. get adult overnight pads instead they are larger and cheaper and can be bought in bulk at Costco or Sams Club

Enjoy your new puppy

Kim, I'm SO sorry you lost your dog!

Where is she going to SLEEP?

Are you going to crate her at night as part of her house training?

Ohhhhhh......wow..... first of all, so sorry you lost your big guy......and I know it's bittersweet to get another one so soon, but she will help heal some loss....

Did you name her yet? Ohhhh...I can't wait to see her.....bet she is a love bug.

I would echo what the others say,...and you might consider taking a stuffed toy of blankie and rubbing it on the mama dog to help the baby over the trauma of leaving the others.....I know I have done that with the last few dogs I got as puppies and it did seem to help.

I am guessing she will be living/sleeping indoors so the crate training is great....and I know that Mud Bay offers puppy classes and those were really, really good..just make sure she has her shots and such before puppy class....it was great because they were all puppies in class & they do learn but they also get "socialization" time.....which was a hoot.....esp for spectators..haha.

Oh boy...I am so excited for you!

Congratulations on your new fur kid. I bet this is a cutie. Sounds like you have been doing some shopping.

Just be sure to keep all your shoes put away safely. Bad lesson learned here on that one. I was amazed how quickly they can grab them right after you step out of them.

Waiting to see the pictures of her when you get her home.

Kimmie...I'm so sorry for the loss of your old boy.

For your new little one, have you decided yet on her feeding program? What her diet will consist of. Treats for training and all that good stuff? Have everything ready for her when she comes home and she'll feel right at home. And of course post plenty of pictures.

YAY KIMMY!

I honestly didn't know if I was going to be up to raising Amy after having lost my beloved Tracey. Puppy training can take the stuffings out of me so if I could do it, you can!

Ok, so I happen to like my furniture in one piece and I do not want it chewed upon, nor to I want to be up all night long with a crying puppy. Therefore, I love love love those toys that you can fill up with food.

Kong toys are one of them where you can put dry kibble in it. The other one is more my fav.....or let me say my lifesaver, its one of those very hard long white looking bones that have a hollow in it. You stuff hot dogs in there. These things have saved my furniture and my sanity. Will keep a puppy occupied for a long time.

CONGRATULATIONS! I can;t wait to see pics of your new baby!!

Mini Aussies are soooo sweet! My favorites are the blue merles.

So sorry for the loss of your last boy.

Congratulations on your new puppy. I highly recommend the book "what all good dogs should know" by volhard and Fisher. It is a small book and easy read. It will refresh your mind on all the things you need to know for your new puppy. Has basic training, housetraining tips and some cute and funny cartoons. I love the book, re-read it every time I get a new dog. Best wishes.

Congrats on getting a new puppy!!

-like someone said, avoid rawhide, even after there 6 months old, its hard to digest. Get Bully Sticks instead. (I reccomend BRAVO or Red Barn)

- Keep the puppy away from other dogs until he gets all his shots.

-Find a good dog food like Natural Balance, Fromm, Canidae, or Merrick. Iams, Nutro and Purina( avoid foods made from Proctor and Gamble) are not good foods as they contain Corn meal which is hard on there digestive system and chicken by product meal (aka chicken poop).

A healthy dog food will not only keep your dog happy, it will keep vet costs low and the amount of food you buy down, since brands made by Proctor and Gamble are filled with preservatives. I presonally like Fromm because they have the same recipe, but different flavors so you can change from one flavor to another with out upsetting your dogs stomach. But, do consult with your vet to find a good dog foor. Some dogs require grain free food while others require grain foods.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for the great advice! And the stuff about raw hide, makes sense but didn't know it could hurt her.

It will be fun to add a new person to the family. Thank you again~! Pics next weekend.
