I have not had my mini very long so i am still new to this!

Ok I was picking his hoofs and the inner part of his hoof was flakeing off chunks of white!!!!

that was yesterday and yes they were wet now today they were better and harder but still pieces were coming off!!!!! What does this mean and what do I need to do to help this??????????

has anyone ever seen this before?

Do you like about the size of say corn flakes
um well it scrapes off like chalky pieces and some chunks close to that I guess(maybe a litle smaller)

what do u recken it is???

I'm no vet, but when I had my big horse her hoofs would do that if I rode in gravel for a while.

It wasn't nothing I was ever worried about.

I am glad to hear that! I am worried about it though

I'm not a farrier nor a vet, but it sounds like your horse is shedding old dead sole tissue. Generally, not a very big deal. Sometimes you see the flaking sole when you pick the hooves, sometimes it sheds and you never know (as it has come off by itself in the corral or pasture). It's possible it's something more serious; but if your mini was just trimmed recently, the farrier would probably have noticed something out of the ordinary.

oh yah i forgot to mention it smelled bad!

someone just told me thrush!!!

I think if you are concerned I would call my farrier or vet on this one. The white flakey stuff should not have an odor, but the frog and a round it is what usually smells if it is thrush. When you clean it out around there.

It is hard for us to imagine exactly what you are talking about so best get a visual inspection. Is he standing in something moist/wet? If so it could be thrush.

Good luck!

I am almost sure now that it is thrush cause when i start picking mainly there it smells the worst!

Well it had rained for several days!

Just stumbled into your post late.....

The white stuff that smells icky is indeed an early sign of thrush. Don't panic. A quick fix is by either spraying up inside the hoof a 50/50 mix of bleach water or by appying Coppertox. Be sure to talk to your farrier about it, though....especially about how much or how often. The store brand stuff is expensive. And it was a farrier that told us about the bleach water as a cheaper alternative.

Thanks!!! I will try that!

The white stuff is probably the sole of the hoof that you are talking about.

Maybe your farrier didn't trim it. He should have used a hoof knife to pear it off.

When your horse stands in dampness, that causes the hoof to get soft and the sole could just be "peeling" such as if I scratched the bottom of it with my hoof pick, I'd get little flakes too under those conditions.

You may just be getting carried away with the normal "stink" from the thrushy "stink".......since you are not used to what a normal smelling hoof smells like. Cleaning feet is a stinky job at times but may not mean your horse has any thrush. Does that make any sense to you? Like a girl who is all prissy with store bought finger nails in a barn would think everything stinks only because she is just not used to "natural horse odors"........

Thrush would be located up at the frog and boy that will stink to the point of you going "oooh".

You can just really look at a thrushy frog and know that can't be right because thrush not only stinks, it's ugly and nasty looking. It looks like all raggedy and like black yuk.

The best stuff I have found is Thrusbuster, cheap little bottle that you just squirt in there every day for a few days and it will be gone. Just keep your horse out of the mud and water. I've found it at

www.jeffersequine.com

I would not use bleach myself as I think it burns tissue.

Maybe Fred will show up. She's a farrier.
