I couldn't find any 7% iodine for dipping the umbilical cord , would 10% be ok, or will that be to strong?

Thanks

We've always used 7%, but I saw 5% in a tack store the other day. After I used 7% this year, some of my foals seemed to be having a reaction of some sort to it. Then I realized, my hands being covered with iodine since some of the zigged when I zagged, the stuff smells REALLY strong, and maybe the reaction they seem to be having is to the smell. Just about burns your eyes. Maybe it's time to rethink this 7% stuff. Never happened before tho.

But I wouldn't use 10%. JMHO. I think I'm going to go buy 5%. I've heard of the use of something called Novasol or Novasal or something like that, but I can't find it in any local tack shops & we have 4 nearby.

I'd like to hear other folks thots on this too.

I thought it was the 1% or 3%Gentle, can't remember, that is supposed to be used, It says that right on the bottle, it's what we use.

Marnie is right, a Gentle 3% iodine is what we use also.

Usually dip them more than once.

The 10% will BURN. If you can't find anything else, try mixing it with distilled water 50/50.

You can also use Nolvasan which doesnt smell bad or stain...

I used the strong Iodine the first year I had foals and it literally almost blinded me for a few minutes it was so strong and I was not getting it where it needed to go.

Our Vet told us to mix the 10% iodine, (10 part water- 1 part iodine).. That is what we did last year and everything went fine. I put it in an old film container. It fits pretty good and not so much liquid to get you drounded in.
