I looked at this very bit last weekend at a show, and wondered exactly the same thing. Just looks like an elongated D ring to me.

Virtually no leverage at all. Even the slotted cheek gives little or no leverage unless the horse drops his head down and goes overbent--then there is some leverage. I was told that by someone who has done extensive study of bits and how they work, and I checked the kimberwickes out for myself & found that the fellow was absolutely right.

The benefit of this bit is the joint doesn't drop down in the center like an ordinary jointed snaffle; it also does not pull up into the molars like an ordinary jointed snaffle.

Ummm...I'm going to call that a D ring snaffle with a curb chain on there for some reason. It's not a Kimberwicke

. My mustang mare (after 12 years or so) went well in a Kimberwicke (or a mild Tom Thumb) and it seemed to keep her a little lighter in my hands when she was actually on the bit, flexed and really moving well..otherwise it was just a snaffle. She had a lovely mouth too though.
