Our 7 month old colt had his back leg lock up. What is this? Can surgery be done on a horse that young and will it be affective for him the rest of his life? He's at the vets now and we need to make our decision by later today. Our vet gave us his opinion but would like some input on this. Thanks

Did he just lock up briefly and was then able to walk on?

I think that A LOT of minis go through a "stage" where they have problem with their stifles locking up but many of them out grow it.

If this is what you are describing, then I would NOT have surgery done on such a young horse, since he may well out grow it.

We found him like this on Thursday and got him to the vet on Friday. They worked on it and unlocked it he took 2 steps and it locked up again, worked on it again and he just stood there and it locked up!

Sorry should also say that he wouldn't walk on it, but could stand on it and put pressure on it.

I am not any expert on this, but what happened with your horse sounds a lot more serious than the kinds of momentary "lockups" I have seen. I hope everything will turn out okay for your boy!

Hey AJS

Just a suggestion. Try doing a search on here under, "Locking Stifles". You'll find LOTS of info on the subject. Good luck!

also try under stifle surgery and you will ge some info there as well horses can go on and be very productive after having the stifle surgery
