I don't blame your horses for being freaked out, I would be too. Birds are not one of my favorites.

That's an Emu. Here in Texas, you'll actually find them running wild. They used to be quite popular and then the market fell out of them so people started turning them loose! I've come across a few of them myself. They can be pretty aggressive if cornered.

OMG!!! And one of my horses was freaked out the first time she saw me in a dress!!!! That would push most of mine to the edge, I think, and I'd be scared to let me little dogs out. It might EAT them

Holy Cow!!!! From the pics, the face looks different than all the Emus here on the east coast. And that's one BIG BIRD!!!

is it an emu? I bet someone is really missing that bird!! I think they are pretty expensive.

Like I said, I have no idea where it came from...it might belong to a neighbor. They don't make loud noises, so someone could've had it for years and me not know about it. I'll ask up and down the road and see if anyone knows anything.

That was just such a surprise!

You could slap a saddle on that thing and ride it.

Thats a big one!

That's an emu. They actually do ride ostriches!!

Not many emus around here but there's lots of ostrich farms...not a meat I like but there's a market for it!

Is it edible???

, just kidding. That would totally freak me out. They run "wild" in Tx??? Wow!

None of my horses would bat an eye at it....because the nieghbor at the old farm had one...to guard her pasture....and boy did it work well at that.

Do becareful if it is not tame....

It is an EMU and is not dangerous. He (saying he just because) looks well fed. He could of just gotten out of someones pen. We had Ostrich and Emu for a few years and our pet Emu just died last year. Emus can be very friendly. Just take some pelleted feed out and put it into a pile and it should come and eat. The meat is real good and the oil that you get from an Emu is the best. I had 3rd degree burns on my hand from a water heater explosion and the only time you can see I had a burn is in the cold weather the skin is discolored and looks just a little funny. The healing time was greatly reduced also. Also, if he comes up and wants attention it is most likely a he.

not surprised the horses were scared... we had a gal move in next door with 4 ostrich. the first day my horses would NOT leave the small pasture to go out into the arena (next to the ostriches) to eat! they soon figured it out though... and her horses ran with the ostriches. she moved over a month ago and i STILL have feathers all over my yard :DOH!

good luck finding his home!

Yummy.

Just kidding.

I've eaten ostrich meat & like it, I'd think emu is much the same?

That picture reminds me of a friend's description of the rodeo she witnessed on the side of the road one day--she was heading home & came across an emu. Someone else had already seen it & called the owner, and when she came along the owner was there trying to catch the bird. He got hold of it around the neck & was wrestling with it--it put up quite a struggle! was pretty funny to hear about it, and would have been even better to see!

Well, the old Bird is still around. I talked to many of the neighbors last night, but none of them knew anything about it. There is a stretch of 3 houses very close together and no one was home at any of them last night...so will try again tonight.

I did put some 12% pellet out and it was gone this morning. I didn't actually see it eat, so I hope he/she got it. Water is not a problem since the creeks are all full.

I gotta find his home. If I don't have any luck tonight, I will have to call animal control. I was hoping to find the owner, but we can't keep pushing our luck. Fortunately, our road has very few cars (maybe 10 a day), but of course, it only takes one...

Don't you think you would KNOW if this guy was missing from your house??? Why aren't they out looking for him?

I'll let you know....

Holy Cow, that is a BIG Birdie!!! That sure beats me trying to tell my husband we had a stray bull trying to get in with the mini's.. I think if I told him about a huge bird, he would have had me committed!!

Seriously, I pray that it doesn't do any harm to you or your animals.. And that you find out where it belongs soon.. Dang, thats a big bird... I am glad we don't have them wild here in Pa..
