Hey Lori,

I am no expert, not even close, but if I had one bagging--especially a maiden--this early, I would probably give a call to the vet. Sorry I'm not much help, but I always call when in doubt! Good luck

Depends entirely what you call "bagging up"

The mares I have due in July and August are bagging up now and that is completely normal- but I term a change in the bag and it beginning to fill "bagging up"

When |I have all my mares foaling at this time of year they start their bags at Christmas and this is normal too.

I would worry if there was no change in the bag but a "starting to fill" bag is just fine- what will the Vet tell you, after all??

If you are worried, OK a Vet check is not a bad idea, but 10 to 1 s/he tells you everything is absolutely normal and then hands you the bill!!

I could not afford to run my stud that way, but I would never tell anyone not to call a Vet.

Hi Lori -- I'm wondering if you mean actually bagging up in the udder or if you might mean that the milk glands are filling? Don't know if you know, but the milk glands are located on the belly, directly in front of the actual udders. If you feel for the udder, move your hand straight ahead towards the mare's belly button. The milk glands are in that area.

Even when I know the due dates, I feel for those milk glands to start filling about 8 weeks before the foal is actually due. Their swelling precedes the filling of the bag. Then I know things are on target. Hope this helps. - karen :saludando:

Just had another thot -- There is a stage, before the milk comes into the udder, that is what we call "loosening," for lack of a better term. The udders start to sag a little & might give the impressioin of starting to fill, but they are just getting ready for that eventuality. This happens maybe 10 weeks before the due date, in my experience. If that's what you're feeling, that would put the mare pretty close to target date. Oh, and July 2 is my birthday.

I had a maiden mare foal yesterday that had been bagged up since the last week of Feb. I thought maybe she had cought on her first heat when she bagged up that early. Her bag was full, but I could not express any milk from her right up until she foaled. She foaled at 326 days (a healthy black pinto colt

: ). That said I would still have the vet check her just to be safe. Is her due date in July based on 340 days?
