I had a mare 3 days ago. Very huge. She had a preemie. Foal was stuck, so we lost him.We figured the foal was a month early. Had hair, mane and tail hairs. Good comformation.Just tiny.Don`t know what happened as I had her already away from the others and didn`t change her diet. She was not bagged up or looked any different a few hours before it happened. But what I find is she is still very big.Could it be possible that she still is in foal. She is only 6 yrs old and this would have been her 2nd foal. She is about 32" tall. She had a blanket Appy colored colt to boot.So that mad it more upsetting.I`ll try a put a photo up.Let me know what you think. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/appymini/boop/1.jpg

I think your best bet is to have vet check her out......

Frankly, with the way this year is going for us and everybody -- just about ANYTHING is possible!

Well around here a few mares that foaled still look like they need to deliver and the other few have become more normal looking a few days after. lf you think twins you need her vet checked at the least. l still looked in foal for months after delivery.

probably not. Sadly, I can relate to her. I'm still not back in shape nor have I lost the weight after having MY baby three months ago. Even though she is a horse we still have the same problem.

You should have your vet check her to be sure, but since this wasn't her first foal and twins are so rare in horses especially minis, I'd say it is likely she just hasn't gotten her shape back yet.

I don't believe it is possible for a mare to foal one baby without the other coming as well (providing there were twins). If she did have twins, there should have been two foals born. In cases where one foal dies, and the other lives, the living twin will keep the dead one there, and the dead one will mummify. This is extremely rare, but not unheard of. Usually if one twin dies, both are aborted. But not one born, then the other waits. I don't think I've heard of that happening at all. Not that it couldn't happen. If I were you, and I wanted to know, I'd have a vet look at her to be sure.

Didn't that happen to Lyn last year or the year before? I was thinking she had a mare that aborted but she felt she was still in foal. After a vet check she was confirmed but that one later died as well before delivery?

Yes - it is possible. I have seen TWO cases.

One percheron mare who slipped a colt.... and later had a healthy foal. The other case was a friend's Thoroughbred mare - who lost a foal at the 8 month range... and then not long after her original due date had a healthy chestnut filly!

Others here have had similar experiences.

It definitely can happen, but I do not think it is the case here.

I would still have her ultrasounded just to be sure, though.

This just happened up here in Maine too. One of my clients had a mare who aborted it's foal late Feb. About 2 weeks later, she started to appear like she was going to foal again soon. Another 2 weeks went by and she foaled the other twin, who is 100% heatlhy! He is marked identical to the twin who was aborted and the mare had no trouble delivering him.

Twins are VERY VERY rare and it does take awhile for the mares to get their figure back. Even after delivering healthy babies, our mares still had a "baby belly" for awhile.

Wasnt me.... my mare resorbed ..... I thought she was still pregnant and so did the vets but there was only tons of fluid and no baby. I thought it was maybe Frankie that had twins and lost one and then the other not long after.....My mare image Is a chronic twinner tho... on ultrasound she gets pregnant with twins every year... then loses one or both. THis year we are trying again....shes due for an ultrasound this week.

My friends LLama had a baby 2 yrs ago and then 3 months later had a live baby.So I just wondered. This mare has been huge all winter.I have been watching her for a long time. And I had her on a strict diet too.The others are not over wieght at all.I also believe I see movement too. Well I`ll talk to the vet. But he is lousy at altersounding here.It ends up just wasting my money. Thanks for the imput,
