: I am looking at purchasing a mini mare, she was foaled in 4-04, she is currently 28", and the owner says she has not grown in the past 7 months and that she will not get any taller. I am concerned that she might not be done growing and did not want one over 28". What is your feedback on this? Do you think she has hit her maturity height at two years old, since she has not grown in 7 months? Thank you for your feedback!!!!!

It's hard to tell......I would look at her full siblings to see how quickly they matured. Different bloodlines tend to mature at different rates (much like humans).

My CockRobin foals tended to mature very early. Most were done growing by age two, & I had a couple who didn't grow past age 1!

: But, on the other hand....I know of some lines who take 3 or 4 years to reach their mature height!

I think each horse and their genetic make up varies from horse to horse.

When Thera was born she was all legs! I was sure she'd go over come darn close. She is 5 now and is almost 33".

Then there's Treasure. Sire is 29, dam is 31.5 and she coming 3 this year is 37 1/2 :new_shocked: . Then Halley, nice small parents and she is coming 2 this year and is at 33.5". If she keeps growing I could care she's R too. Missy is 28" at 9 mos, her sire is 29 3/4 and her dam is Thera.

I'd say the filly will grow some more. If the seller is willing to give a"height" guarantee, try it. I got Halley "without" one and am very happy, I got Glow with one and the same holds. You just have to decide what you want and how far you're willing to go.

Alot depends on the bloodlines also. Treasure is lots of GMB and favors her GGdad alot!

And at the end of the day it is far more important that your filly is all you wish her to be, has a good temperament, good conformation and is big enough to have a foal easily than it is that she is 29"

So, you must ask yourself "Do I really like this filly"?? If the answer is es then another inch will make no difference.

I think it very likely that she will creep on slowly, most do, and maybe even make 30"- since you will have owned her then for two years it is unlikely to alter the way you feel.

If she is the right horse for you, and the right price, go for it.

I doubt you will regret it.

Yep I agree look at her full sibilings. They can end their height at an early age or some still grow at 3 to 5 years of age. This is my honest opinion but you can probably see her at 29" to 30". So you just have to ask yourself is it a gamble buying a young horse at the height you want and chance it she might grow over, or look for a mature horse thats done growing at the height you want.
