this was SOOO much fun!!!!!!!!!!! :aktion033:

so on saturday i took my big girl Mesa team sorting at this trainer's ranch. i was teamed with a few older barn friends. i wasn't sure how Mesa would take it....if she worked cattle before it was who knows how many years ago. i've had her for 3, not sure if the previous owners did cattle on her, i suspect not.

so of course i was reeeeallly nervous.

it was pretty good entertainment just watching the guy's try to put the steers in the pens, lol!!! number nine was being a :stupid: :deadhorse2: and he didn't want to go with the other cows....so the trailer guy roped him and tried to drag him in....well the steer was having none of that and i turn around to see the trailer guy on his butt in front of a very angry steer who didn't want to move. they eventually got the truck and chased him in.

my team was first. none of us have any idea how to do this, we're just running around in a cow pen having fun. within about 30 seconds, i lost track of what number we were on, and i'm over there spinning circles, "ARE WE ON NUMBER NINE YET" ..."No, i'm on three" ..."DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE TO CHASE NINE!!?!" ..."yeah get him away from there" ..."BUT I HATE NUMBER NINE!!!!" ... i let nine stay

.

so we got about 6 cows over, two of which were supposed to be there.

on the next run, we did much better. i still accidentally let 2 slide that werent supposed to, but i held off a few. Mesa got really into it, running for those cows with her ears back and head down, threatening them not to slow down and having a heck of a good time being able to chase something. The rounding up of them afterwards is the fun part. Them squishing them into a ball so the next team has a hard time. hehe fun fun.

on our third one we got a lot, but this one went pretty funny. Number Nine was still not liking the idea of being chased around, and i think Zero was a bit mental. seriously. the few teams before us had been having trouble with Zero running to the other end on his own. When you go anywhere near him, he just sprints off down there. which was nice if they called Zero....but not nice if you weren't supposed to get him. so in our third run, when we were on number Five...Five was hiding behind Zero, and when one girl on my team went to get Five, off went Zero. and Five was slow in getting out.

Then on bunching them up in the end, we put Zero on the edge so the next team would have to deal with him too. :bgrin well just as i put the last cow in it's place, Zero ran towards the end, all by his lonesome. Upon realizing he was out there alone, he turned around and cried for his buddies! As if he was on the other side of the fence or something!! and i'm like Dude, you ran over there, smart one! So i ran out to get him back, and the announcer is like "Alex get your cow back" i'm like "Sorry!!! not my fault the cows mental!!!"

so i ran the length of the arena catching Zero. We squished him between 2 and 5.

so we thought our night of fun was over, my one team member went to untack, i stayed to socialize and have a late dinner. then the runs were over, and it was Jackpot time. with only 2 people i couldn't enter. Then one lady who works at the feed store and had been riding with the trainer all night came up to me and asked if i wanted to enter with her. i kept looking around at who she was talking at, i was like "mmm-m-mmm ME??? But i dont know what i'm doing!" "oh that's okay neither do i, it'll be fun" "uhhh but who's our third person..." so we found the other lady i had been riding with earlier, and made our little team and entered, just to have fun because of course we couldn't win anything with our little team that doesn't know anything.

we were first, again, which was kind of good because no matter what we'd be in the lead. so the feed store girl got the first cow, 7, and pushed him to the other end, then sent the other team member to go get 8, which she did pretty well, then sent me for 9. once again "mmm-mm-m-mah MEE?" "yes you" "but i don't cut, i can't cut, IT'S NUMBER NINE!!!" "yes you, just go get him!"

well two cows (Zero and 2) were standing in front of 9. so i had to pass those to get to him. As soon as i got close to Zero to get 9, off went Zero.

But i got nine out of there and i was so proud!!

--- then when we went to ball them up, 9 was being bad again. I tried to move him in with the rest of the bunch, but he just stood there and looked at me and didn't move. the other girl was like "What's the problem over there?" "Nine's having a defiance issue...move pretty please little cow" she had to come and whack him with the end of the reins to get him to move.

to our suprise, we were only up against one other team. This was a team of 3 guys: the trainer who put on the event, the trailer guy who's married to the feed store lady and battled with number 9 earlier, and some other cowboy i didn't know. if they couldn't beat us it would be pretty embarrasing. Well they got 2 accross, then let like 3 slip, so they were out and we were tied with a score of nothing.

our next run, we got 2 accross and my job was to hold back the ones that weren't supposed to cross, and i didn't let ANY go by!!! :aktion033: so we got a score of two!

then it was the guy's turn. they got two accross pretty easily, but on their third cow, two ran in front of them and got accross.

soooo...................

WE WON THE JACKPOT!!!!!!

little ol' me and Mesa and our team.

it was really funny when the guys had to fork over the money...trailer guy was reluctant to admit to loosing to his wife and bunch of girls. he gave me my share and was like "sure i'll give it to Alex happily...but YOU....hmmph" and gave her hers eventually.

so here's Mesa and I at the ranch!!

Good for you Alex!! It's fun to beat the boys/guys isn't it? Mesa is beautiful.

Is the ranch you were at in the Burbank area? I used to live near there (Tujunga) and rode the fire breaks in the mountains. My daughter was talking about it a couple of weeks back. She told some people we were riding with that we would ride the fire breaks and she would hold on for life and had her eyes shut! :new_shocked: But it was so much fun!

Mesa looks GREAT! I'm so glad she has her own person to take care of her. It sounds like you two had a blast. Someday I'd love to take my little arab team penning. L
