DH got a job offer over the phone this morning, from a company in Virginia, so just waiting for them to email the paper work.

Figured I might as well, pick peoples brains on who they have used to move.

Have only actually met you once but still gonna miss ya in the neighborhood. Just make sure you're still on the forum and stay in touch. Once an Oregonian always an Oregonian.

Virginia is a pretty nice state.

Several of us on the forum live here....so, welcome in advance. In what area will you be ?

Shari....Since deb and I are moving across the country, we also looked into movers. We found a company that is really reasonable and worth looking into...but deb has the info on her computer and she isnt home right now. Will PM you with the info when she gets home in a bit.

CONGRATS on your hubby's job offer!!!!!!!

Thank you everyone!

Marie, I would of preferred to stay but there are just no jobs in Oregon, for anything near what my DH does and they are not hiring people his age.

But having DH given the offer of a job in VA, has given me a lot of hope!

Bess, he will be working on the Dahlgren base, and looking for places up to an hour away. As far out in the countryside as possible. Am looking to either rent or buy at this point, as much land as we can afford.

The biggest concern is the horses. I either need a place here to board them until I can bring them over or send them over there I can keep them in their own dry lot paddock and fed Grass hay and be the only horses in that paddock. Not having much luck so far. But I have hope. I plan on moving Maggie the mini, The Icelandic's Dyfra, Stjarna and most likely the yearling Edda.

So if anyone has a spare paddock over that way, for up to a month stay, please let me know!

I did not know you were moving too Linda. What state are you going too?

The info on the Mover would be wonderful!! Thank you.

hopefully you can come back to the Northwest someday.

Shari...we are moving to Florida in September.

Well, while I was looking up the info I was going to send you, I found some reviews about that company and let's just say we won't be using them! Yikes! So, we are back to square one on that part of our move...finding movers that are reliable and reasonable!

PM me and let me know which movers, NOT to use!! I feel for you, its not a easy thing.

Good luck with the move!

We've moved more times than I care to think about! Three times we had professional movers (Mayflower). I really think it is easier to do it yourself. We never had any damage or loss when we did our own packing.

The last time we moved I started about a month before and had pretty much all the nonessentials done. If you can, buy real moving boxes. Sometimes you can find them used after someone has moved. But it is really a good investment to use real moving boxes. They are all uniform in size and it's easier to store them if you have to, or fit them into a UHaul.

If you are not able to pack, you can hire day help through the moving companies. YOu just have to watch them--be around while they are packing. I knew of someone who's packers put the kitchen garbage in a box. NOT a nice thing to find a few months later!

ps I enjoyed the pictures of "driving Maggie"!

We'll miss you around here but Virginia is nice and a job is a job. Keep us updated. Did you find a home for Theia? I don't see her included on that list, nor the donkey.

Thank you Marsha.

We are both getting older and I can't help as much as I like. A number of pieces of our furniture are too heavy for just my husband and son to move and I might not be able to follow husband straight across. So there is no way I could move them.

I do make sure to properly pack the fragile's myself. After 15+ years of following husband around when he was in the Navy, have learned a few tricks. But this time around, the distance, rather shop around for a good long distance mover.

The company will be paying for at least part of the move, so we will work with that.

Shari,

The last time we moved I told my husband I was not going to move all the heavy stuff anymore, either. No armoires, refrigerators, couches, or safes. He hired two guys from the day work pool through the moving company. The reason you might call the moving company for day help, is they know which guys have experience loading a truck. The two guys were easy to work with; we fed them lunch, the agreed hourly wage and a tip. The guys worked together frequently, so they made a good team. Very easy!

This work horse shocked her husband the day she declared she would no longer carry heavy objects into a moving truck. Almost as much as when she declared she would no longer be the second man on a two-man post hole digger.

Shari,

I am sure it's bittersweet the whole moving across the country prospect, as I know from your posts how much you love your current farm. I am sure it is also a relief for your husband to get a job offer after such a long road..... I wish you all the luck in the world and hope your move goes smoothly.

I hope you guys find a great moving company, I know how hectic that can be, when I moved from Salem to Olympia, the company picked out the movers for all of us that were moving......unfortunately for me I had to move from one house to another before my "big move" so I had to pack & put all of my stuff in storage...so the movers had it really easy, just pick up my stuff at storage & move me up. If I had it all to do again, I would have let them pack me too...what a PITA (pain in the *ss)....
