My 31" stallion hates my 33" gray mare.

I have a stallion that produces beautiful foals, so I wanted to breed him to a real nice white gray mare I have. She turned 3 years old this year and was looking forward to breeding her after show season.

The mare came in season yesterday, and so I put her with my stallion and he really abused her, biting at her, running her and isolating her from the other mares so bad that I had to remove her from the pasture.

I thought that he would accept her once she came in season, but no. I have purchased other mares and he has breed them, and not acted like this and he was raised with this mare.

Anyone ever have a stallion do this?

I don't know what to do except see if I can breed her to an outside stallion.

If your stallion hand breeds you could try that. I would say it is worth a shot before sending her off to a different breeder. But I think that there are just incompatible horses (like people) sometimes.

Not the same situation BUT I know the first year I had my black mare she about murdered my stallion when they were intogether -- they shared a pen for a week before she came in heat and they got along fine but when she came into heat and he showed intrest in her she would attack him and even pulled out chunks of his hair and kicked him all over and bit him. She had him pretty banged up come the next morning when we saw and removed him, we never expected it since they had been getting along fine. But now they can run together anytime and they do fine -- she has foaled from him the last 2 years and is bred back to him again this year.. Must have just been something of a domiance issue with them to start with..

Good luck with your mare and stallion.

My stallion does hand breed. Thank you we will try to hand breed him to this mare, and see what he does.

You can try using a little dab of Vick's on his nose so he doesn't catch her scent, or you could try putting a blanket on her that is normally worn by a mare he does like. Some stallions don't like mares of a certain color, that could be an issue too. I'm not a breeder so I don't know if the Vick's would keep him from breeding her entirely (after all, people put it on stallions at shows to keep them from paying attention to the mares), I'm just offering things I've heard.

If she gets an attitude with him you can use breeding hobbles. If he won't hand breed her maybe stall her next to him for a bit. It may help if he only sees her.

Yes, it happens here too. I have a stallion who is picky or doesn't sometimes agree with my choice.

I put these mares to another stallion

Try another mare's blanket. It will change her look and her smell( a little0 Also I have a friend that swears if you take two horses that hate each other on a trip on a trailer that they become friendly afterward. I never tried it though.

Just put a different coloured blanket on her and he will think she is wonderful!!

Rabbits father Fred took and instant dislike to our then lead rein pony who was a white Grey- he was a herd sire and he would touch her even when she was in full season.

I even brought him up and tried in hand but he actually averted his gaze and looked over his shoulder!!

Then one day I washed her and, not really being geared up for Minis at the time, I had no stall to put her in and needed her clean so I put a dustbin (garbage can) bag a black plastic one, over her and turned her out- Fred was on her as she went through the door- got a nice Chestnut filly!!!

This is the first time I have ever heard of a male of any species thinking a trash bag was sexy lingerie. lol!

You can try teasing him with a mare he likes with the grey mare near by and then when he's hot and ready switch the mares out.. Course you'll need a helper or two.. Have several friends that do this and it works great with the big horses and thankfully I haven't had a problem with our guys, cept for some mares I've noticed he's 'lazier' when it comes to breeding them, with those mares he has the attitude "ok if you insist" and then he has mares where you can hardly hold him back lol

I would also hand breed, had bought a mare with foal at about 2 months old, grew up with my Stallion.

When she was 3 years old decided our stallion could breed her, filly was not having any part of it, so the Stallion chased her out of the herd. He was nasty, not his character.

Had to hand breed and after that she was excepted back in the herd. Good Luck

I would be willing to bet that your stallion senses something that is not quite right - sometimes a mare may appear to be in heat, but really isn't ovulating, or her cervix isn't ready, or just something -- it is not unusual for stallions to reject mares at one part of the season and then willingly breed later on. As a show mare, it is possible that maybe her hormones are a little wacky right now and she may need a few months to get in sinc.

It is true that some stallions have an aversion to certain mares, and I have used the "trick them" techniques - funny thing tho, not many of these mares actually got in foal on that cycle - the cycles that the stallion was "hot to go" are the ones that my mares usually conceive on.

I think sometimes we expect our horses to behave like WE WANT them to, and forget that Mother Nature has been doing something right for millions of years.

Just my opinion, but after handbreeding for 25 years I have gotten pretty used to "the look" that my stallions can give me if the mare isn't just quite right!

Update!! This mare is in season good, but he is just not interested. So I thought I would give him a break today, and try the blanket method and see if that works.

I have another yearling stallion that I purchased to use hopefully next year, and he smells around on this mare like he knows she is in, and seems interested in her, but he is not ready to take on the challenge, if you know what I mean.

Do you think my stallion is prejudice and just does not like the color of this mare?

I noticed today when I was watching him that I have a 2-year old palomino filly in the pen next to him and he does not seem to like her either. If she comes up next to his pen, he will run towards her with his head down and try to chase her away.

I am beginning to think he likes mare that are pintos and more darker colored.

What do you think?

It just may never work for this stallion/mare combo, but I totally agree with changing the color/scent. Corona totally HATES a mare I purchased specifically to pair with him! I think he would seriously hurt her if I allowed them to run together. She is a very white palomino color. I put a purple blanket on her and he shows NO agresstion toward her! True story! Without the blanket, he acts like he wants to rip her head off!

Some stallions just do not like light coloured mares- it may be a primeval instinct thing as light coloured animals would have been unusual and unusual animals stick out like a sore thumb and attract predators.

It may just be the horse doesn't like light coloured mares!!!

I do not think it has anything to do with something being wrong- I have had a stallion turn down a mare that was "wrong inside" but in that case it was physical and obviously it made him uncomfortable etc, so he refused to have another go.

?
Some wild stallions can be choosey over their mares colors. There's one stallion (not in a herd I've seen but I've read about him somewhere else) who will only pick bay mares. All of his mares are bays. In the herds I've seen here in Oregon I've often found that duns will stick with duns and colored with colored (pintos)

If you're stallion doesn't like her...maybe it's time to find her another hubby

How neat this subject came up. I have a stallion that only likes dark mares, and one that only likes light. I do try and pair them up that way anyway but never really thought anyone else had that problem. I just thought my guys were odd.

: Nice to know it happens to others.

I have a problem likr this to kinda. My mare creme soda the cremello mare is very picky wih stallions i think. We tried to see if she would show heat to quest my new stallion and she was biting him kinda and he has his privets hangng down like he wanted to breed. I am wondering if she would like a darker colored horse or what her problem is. She also wont show heat to any of our horses none can make her have a heat cycle unless she might like them. I wish there was a way to blind herf rom seeing that its a certan horse and get it done.

Sometimes a certain stallion won't like a certain mare and then it can work in reverse, the mare doesn't like the stallion. Good luck.

Just because the mare looks and acts (to you) like she is "in season good," doesn't mean she really is cycling properly. I had a mare this year that would show to the stallions, but they wanted nothing to do with her. They had absolutely no interest right from the get-go, and both stallions were first timers. One stallion eventually started going after the mare when she'd show to him. This continued through two cycles, yet both stallions willingly bred other mares. During the second cycle that we attempted to breed her on, we took her to the vet for an ultrasound and she wasn't cycling properly. We even put her on Regumate and then gave her Lutalyse to try to get her going, but it didn't work. This is a maiden mare, so time will tell if it is a permanent thing or just something that happened this year.
