Ok, here is the situation. I am selling a colt, and the buyer wants to board him at my place. She may also want training on him. I am going to keep him till he is weaned free. After that, what should the rate for full board be, with possibly minimal training.

It depends on your expenses and how much time you will have to put into him. If he's out on pasture with a run-in, it won't cost you nearly as much as if he's in a stall with hay and expensive bedding. (I assume as a weanling you will need to feed him grain either way)

I would realistically figure out what it costs to feed him, how much time you would have into him each month between care and training, then decide what your time is worth.

Whatever you do, even if you are selling him to a friend, put together at least a simple board contract. Generally board charges are due the first of the month for that month (i.e. in advance)

I charge $150.00 per month, all in.

That includes everything except vets fees and vaccinations- although I did do the tetanus for free- I do all worming and feed, all stalling, bedding and all the work.

Now come spring, if show training is required we would have to work out a fee for that- also clipping and taking to shows- that would be "one off" fees in each case + entries.

You have to make all this plain at the start .

HAVE A CONTRACT!!!

I board my boys at a big horse barn. I think thier normal stall bording price is like $250? and I pay $100 per mini plus $20 for sawdust. I think that is reasonable for stalling. Pasture would be a different story and I don't have a clue what to tell you there. Training I would charge per hour, so if you did 4 15 minute sessions a week you would charge like an extra $10-$20 or whatever a week.

Good luck. I think that is nice that your boy will get to stay at home so you know where he is and what he is doing! :bgrin
