Ok i saw a add for mini and contacted them. I was told she(mare) is double registered there asking 250.00 for her she is 18 is trained for halter and driving. has shown in both but has been a broodmare the last several yrs. Then they tell me papers do not come with her. They are selling to just let her go but will not let her papers go with her. I have NEVER had anyone tell me this. Should i stay away from this seller? Why would they not give her papers up with her? Im so confused on why anyone would do that?????

Sometimes we hold the papers if they are pets and we do not want them to be bred. We offer them at a lower price without papers.

Only the seller can answer that question. Looking for a positive "reason", perhaps they do not want her bred any more and think selling her without papers will help prevent someone from buying her to breed. Of course, there could be other negative reasons. I don't think you will find an answer unless the sellers are willing to explain.

The most obvious reason is that they want to sell her as a pet only........ Why do YOU want her? (You didn't say.)

Not meaning to be rude, but if you're looking for a registered, trained to drive, and proven broodmare for $250??? Count yourself very lucky.

Im wanting for a pasture buddy/pet. Papers dont matter much to me. I dont breed and I dont show but when you advertise as registered and all she has done you would like to look up or ask people who know the breed about her bloodlines(more just cuz im interested not wanting to show) but then say wont give papers it scares me the horse may not be theres or just something not on the up and up. I have had big horses all my life and have never had someone say that so it caught me off guard. Also I did ask seller but never really got a answer on why papers didnt come with her. Also informed them I do not breed or show and open to giving all info on myself, myfamily and our home.I want them to know im a good person who loves animals. After all this info I asked this question and asked them three different times with no answer to this question so it has me concerned. Not bashing this person just wanted to know if this is normal with the selling of minis. I have never heard of anyone advertise as registered then say papers do not go with her.

Also I have not seen her in person only seen in email so I have no idea what condition she may or may not be in. Im not in a hurry to buy im just looking right now and when I saw her add and all about her and then the price I thought wow and inquired on her.

Also i didnt mean to sound rude in my orig. post. I just didnt understand and thought with all the knowledge here i will get a good answer. I would never say sellers name or give any info on this person. I just wanted to know if this is something that goes on to. I have a dog that is fullblooded but have no papers on him cuz they didnt want there bloodline of there dogs going else where. They breed show dogs and i loved him and bought him. I didnt know if people do this with minis also

Ok thanks for the info! I thought that might be the reason but wasnt sure. Unsure and untrusting is a bad fault i have. Unsure on minis and Untrusting due to past experiences.

I don't think you sound rude at all. I think it is weird that you have asked 3 times and they won't give you an answer. Is she nearby, that you could go see her? I think your point about her condition is very valid. She could be really skinny, or lame, or have some other problem, that the "bargain" price would not be a bargain at all. And ownership too. Perhaps they could email you a copy of the papers, so that you can see their name listed as owner. On the other hand, in this economy and being winter, there are some really good deals out there. But I think you have the right to know the whole story on this little gal.

You could also ask to just SEE a copy of the papers so that you know her age and bloodlines and they match the mare.

Go with your gut feeling.

I agree go with your what you feel.

Might be good to get a hold of Marty!!!

Marty is happy to refer you to some wonderful people in our area who have several nice healthy horses in your price range, papers and all. Just give her a call.

I would be concerned about actual ownership. If they say she is Double registered and then say no papers. I might think they may just be boarding the horse and not been paid. Maybe they need to go thorough the courts to sell her.

thanks im following my gut on this one!!! NO GO!!!! I will just keep looking like i said im in no hurry and think i will take Marty up on her suggestion!

Yep I'd run the other way, more on principle than anything. If they have papers, send them with the horse, it only does a disservice to the horse to withold them. If your going to sell grade horses then don't bother with breeding reg ones, honestly. If you raise reg horses then sell reg horses.

If an animal is registered, the papers must be forwarded to the new owners within 6 months by law! You cannot hold papers! Not in Canada, anyway.

Edited to add: that may just be with dogs and cats (CKC, AKC, TICA etc.). Ooops.
