new foal enema question???

We were blessed with a beautiful new filly around 5:45pm. Our vet is out of town (naturally) but will be here in the morning. The on call vet advised me to hold off on the enema to give her a chance so I did. She has passed 4 good sized dark brown stools and I'm just wondering if an enema is still necessary as Mom is getting very possessive. Even with the banamine Mom is pretty "wooped up on". She was in labor most of the day.

As soon as I can I'll get pictures up. She's a purdy one. Brewers Feature Debonnair x Gingerbreads Blue Mischief. We're so excited. This is the first foal for CN Miniatures!!!

I wouldn't worry about an enema since she did pass stools but better to listen to other people on here with more experience than I have I kinda a newbie still only have done 3 foals so far

But I wanted to say congratulations on your first foal enjoy and have a ball waiting for pictures

I would not bother with the enema at this point, since she is doing fine on her own without intervention. I normally find myself having to give them to the colts a lot more often...rarely a filly needs one, but moreso the colts will. I read that somewhere years ago, that it is the colts that most often have the troubles in that department, and I have made mental notes throughout the years, and the article has proven to be accurate...at least when using my minis as "references".

Thanks for the replies. I needed a little reassurance. I'll get some pictures up in a little bit. She started out jet black with just a bit of white in the swirl on her forehead, but now that she's dry she's a smokey gray color. She's a pistol. Since she found her feet she's only laid down a couple of times. She's even been sleeping standing up already. I'm headed back to the barn. Hubby has been babysitting. I'll put some pictures up when I get back in.

Sounds like your new girl did it all on her own.......

Occasionally, a newborn will still need an enema the next day to help losen "things" up, but it's very rare. You will be able to tell because she will hold her tail in the air and do some straining. Your new little one is probably going to be just fine since she's already passed several times now. You should be noticing her manure is changing color because of her milk intake.

We only give one if the baby isn't producing. What our vet has us do is buy fleets, empty the container, then fill with 1/2 and 1/2 Joy and water. She says that the fleets is way too harsh and is not necessary. Poor babies have been through enough by that point without setting their poor butts on fire!

I use the baby fleet and empty the whole thing most times I will just use warm water.

I dont always do one at birth it depends on the foal however I have started making it routine to give one on day 2 (late day 2) not sure why but that seems to be the time especially colts seem to start to strain a bit

Just keep watching her...........I had a foal who didn't need one until her 3rd day, she was fine until then.

My vet has me use a wide tip syringe (60cc), mix half water and half lube (like KY jelly), then fill the syringe, give 30 cc's and then wait a couple minutes and then do the other 30 cc's.

When we give an enema we use the child's Fleet Applicator.......pour out the contents, and then make our own.

Our "homemade" mix is 1/2 warm water, 1/2 mineral oil, and a drop of mild liquid soap.

Our previous vet recommended this many years ago. He also said that the Fleet mixture has a lot of chemicals in it that can be too harsh for a newborn foal.

Once you buy one or two of the Fleet brand applicators, you can wash them after each use and re-use them.
