I am actively looking for an LGD specifically to live with my sheep/horses........I prefer a youngster born on a farm with sheep, horses, chickens, cats, other dogs........breed not important anatolian, akbash, tatra, marema....or crosses fine.....I know many on here have LGD's so hoping a few can point me to where they found theirs........my current semi LGD (actually a borzoi) is getting too dang old and is no longer up to the job when the weather is bad........we are rapidly increasing our flock and with the nature of our valley changing predators are being pressured so I prefer to get ahead of the problem......I know I didn't put down pyr...part pyr might be fine but I need something with a tighter guarding tendency ...pyrs are notorious for being able to guard large areas and I only have 10 acres....also I need one of the breeds or a dog from lines known to deal with airborne predation (akbash/anatolian/kangal)......we have alot of hawks and owls and my finn lambs are tiny so I need effective control for airborne predators as well. If anyone knows of litters or up coming litters or great breeders etc......let me know.......

Check out www.akc.org and get in touch with each breed club for breeder referrals. Not everyone's stock will be conformation show dogs but I'll bet all have had the recommended health testing done and that's incredibly important these days.

I cant wait till I can get a LGD again.. but you know the issues we had.. be prepard to have dog proof fencing cause they will wander thru your fence and assume the rest of the neighborhood needs there protecting to.

envy in this case most of the breeds are not even AKC recognized.....these are purely working animals ...and that is what I have in mind........I know the dog drill and am just looking for other input/references...........you really do not want to take chances with these dogs.....so hoping someone on here has a similar setting and a good outcome :bgrin

rori,

This may or may not be helpful.

We have just under 4 acres, and our livestock guardian needs were/are fairly light....mainly act as a deterrent to coyotes and roaming domestic dogs for the horses' sakes, and to protect our little dogs and cats (and future chickens). Our thought was that this dog's presence would be the most important thing.

We adopted Ella from the local Humane Society with the thought that even if she didn't protect a whole lot, she'd be a great friend and a good deterrent. She has far exceeded our expectations. She constantly places herself between her "herd" and whatever may be out in the woods. Yesterday morning, she was watching us and the horses, but when we went inside she moved to watch the cats who were sunning themselves on the driveway. She is amazing at gently making friends with each of our animals without them feeling threatened or intimidated. (and she and our neutered male toy poodle are madly in love...)

We don't know her pedigree, although the vet suggested a mix of Kuvacz and lab or retriever. She is not a wander, and I tend to believe that the mix helps with that. Wet ook the chance that she could have had no guarding instincts, but she is great, so I would just say not to rule out a mix.

Good luck!

If you email me off the list - I do have the phone number for a lady in Washington that sells them for a friend. [email protected]

Her friend raises sheep in Northeastern Nevada and the dogs (Pyr-Anatolian or Pry-Marama crosses) are born and live with the sheep (5000head in different herds). She has 30 adults working with the herders.

She told me she could meet me in Portland (she's 4 hours away) or possibly Eugene this Spring, but is probably closer to you. We're looking at getting one or two in the Spring. She just had a bunch of puppies and a few that were 3-4 month olds delivered to her at the beginning of the month.

There are rescues that you can check with. I used to raise Anatolians but my guys are getting up in their years now.

You might want to contact Sandii Turner at Quarter Moon Farms, I believe she is raising Anatolian x Pyr. I can't tell you anything about them as I have never met them.

If you want a pure Anatolian feel free to email me and I will check around and see who has any youngsters. [email protected]
