I did post an add on the saleboard but thought I would post here to. I am looking for a Pony just starting the search.

I have some criteria of course..

now before everyone gets on a flame fest about me looking for a certain color.. I dont "need" a pony we are just going to get our feet wet. I figure If i am going to be breeding them into my mini lines I should learn about them at the showing end as well. However since I am not going to jump into anything or any horse I have the time to find EXACTLY what I want which is where the color comes in . I realize a good horse is any color and I also realize a good horse is out there in the color I WANT
smile.gif
ok now that is said lol

I am thinking I dont want a modern but to be fully honest I dont really know enough about all the different divisions to make that a 100 percent statment

I do want a gelding a mare would be ok i guess but would prefer a gelding.

I want a TRUE FLEA BITTEN GRAY

prefer not a baby baby but.. not ruling that out. I Dont know much about showing halter in ponies other then I have seen people running behind them chasing them and me and raven will have to figure out who will be the runner and who will be the chaser lol(see what I mean about actually jumping in and getting my feet wet before jumping on the breed to a ASPC bandwagon)

but I do want something that can be competitive in the halter ring and performance as well as we will be showing it. Doesnt have to be National Champion level but something that can be competitive youth wise at the local level and perhaps congress who knows?

We just want a good family pony we can learn with and have a good time with and yes I am somewhat embarassed to say it but I am pretty stuck on the color issue.(ducking now)

......you may be waiting awhile for that true flea bitten grey. I can't say I've honestly seen one. There are several GREAT ponies out there in a variety of other colors.

Now, you don't have to "chase" a halter pony. The Foundations and Classics generally don't have a tailer. The modern pleasures and moderns usually do because they normally show in a bit and you need to drive them up into the bit. So......if you can get over the color issue SOMEBODY is sure to have the pony of your dreams!

I know
sad.gif
I have seen 2 but it wasnt when I was really looking and they were at shows and really have no idea who or where they even are.. will take forever i am sure which is why I figured i would let everyone I can know the more people know the better shot I have
smile.gif

of course it is always possible in the search I find something else

Lisa hi,

I can understand your concerns about NOT jumping right in...best to learn all you can.

As for the "true flea-bitten grey" ..you might be able to find one, but am not sure you could find a baby who will be 100% flea-bitten. I am not really good with genes and I would guess that Lewella would be the one to ask about that. I know there are many lines of true grey(not silver dapples) out there. I do know that the flea-bitten color in greys is caused mainly by the red color and more rare from the black color. Flea-bitten is seen more in Arabians-why I am not sure <?> I used to raise Arabians. The chestnut foals, called rose greys when they would age would sometimes turn flea-bitten, but not always! I had many greys and none turned a true flea-bitten. I have a feeling it depends on the bloodline(genes) as to who will turn and who will not turn. I have never seen a true flea-bitten Shetland pony, but I think they are out there. You just need to be patient which is sounds like you are

Again I am sure Lewella will see this as she has seen A LOT of ponies and will know more about the genes and which lines. I would say possibly the Silver Mane ponies?? Am I right Lewella?

Good Luck Lisa,

Jenny

Nothing wrong with being picky and wanting a specific color!

For some reason ponies seem to not get flea bitten like some breeds. That said, there are a couple of flea bitten stallions out there who do produce flea bitten grays. The one that comes to mind the quickest is Billy Bob's Mercury VB who belongs to Hopwood's Pony Ranch in Nebraska http://www.hopwoodsponyranch.com - still under construction. He's a Foundation Shetland, not real big, think he's 41 inches. I have two daughters of his (not grays) that are 41 and 42 inches. Both have been competative in halter and could be competative in performance. Both have also been shown sucessfully by youth.

I don't know yet if the gray stallion I coown with Bellevue Farm in Iowa is going to produced flea bitten grays or be flea bitten himself. He's graying very slowly (his base color is blue roan - blue roan sire, gray dam) so it could be years before I know on him!

The only ones you really need a tailer for are the Moderns.
smile.gif
They are allowed in the other divisions but not required (I don't think they are even required for Moderns).

oh lisa we saw the most beautiful flea bitten gray mare at the gordyville show this summer. cant remember who owned her. we just stood and stared. she really did look like a small arab. i do think doc taylor had one on his site advertised one time. we never used a tailer with patches as we jsut tell her to trot and she does. It does get a little confusing though showing minis and ponies at the same show. Kinda have to wipe your mind clean before you switch to the other one LOL

Apologies in advance for hijacking your thread to turn it into a color question.

I thought that flea-bitten was just a stage in the greying process, a temporary effect? Are there greys that stay flea-bitten throughout the greying process?

Good luck in your search Lisa. I think shopping is half the fun! And you know I'm excited that you are venturing into Shetland-land.

Hi Suzanne

It is a stage of greying, but it is permanent as far as I know. Egyptian Arabian horses seem to have the most flea-bitten animals. They tend to turn flea-bitten later in their lifes. JMO
