To get my boy gelded I have to take him to Auburn, CA. Which is a 100 mile trip. So, after he was gelded I would have to drive him 100 miles home. Would this be ok for him?

I wouldnt , he will be groggy for a while and his balance wont be great , he really needs to be walking or he will swell up , isnt there an alternative ?

From my experience, my vet wants me to keep my newly gelded guys stalled and on banimine for the first 24 hours. After that turned out for exercize, and I'm to watch for excessive bleeding, swelling. I would think if the vet would keep him the first 24 hours and if you stopped every two hours for him to rest, it would be ok, but your vet is the one to ask. I also know of another mini breeder that travels to have hers gelded, not sure of the distance, but she has told me they do alright on the trip home.

Interesting topic... I have a stallion to be gelded this spring, and I plan to take him to the vet 150 miles from here, as he is senstive to sedative and they are the closest equine specialists, the local vets specialize in cattle or small animals plus it just might end up as a cryp surgery (I'm pretty sure I've felt tiny ones, but if so, they are very tiny). I don't see why there should be a problem, as long as he is fully awake before starting the trip home.

Katiean there is Great Basin Equine Vet clinic and hospital. They can do the surgery if he is a crypt.

Five or 6 years ago, I took my stallion 55 miles to be gelded. We gave him time to wake up and I brought him home. He was fine! Good luck with your boy.

We've hauled 50-60 miles to the clinic to have some gelded. They do fine on the trip home--we hang around the clinic until they're steady on their feet, then load them up & come home. 100 miles shouldn't be any different.

supaspot--the horse isn't going to swell up if he isn't walked in the first few hours. I wouldn't load one up an hour after gelding and ship him all the way across the country, but a 2 hour drive isn't going to cause him any problems with swelling.

It is a gelding clinic that I would be taking him to in Auburn,CA. The price is something like $75. He is not a crypt and the same vet that certified he has both and they are dropped and the same size and shape wanted $550 as a base price. That is why I was looking at this clinic that they said they try to have 2x's a year. He isn't studish. But take him around other horses and he won't shut up. He can get a whole barn going.

I would allow a good deal of time for him to "come to" after... at least maybe 3-6 hours. Otherwise, I'd go for it if that is your only option, and get it done.

Geez! That's highway robbery! Even with gas so high, it would be worth the trip. Here we have to haul to the vet, none will make a ranch call for gelding as a general course. That is a 30 minute haul, but we wait until they have had a chance to shake off most of the sedation, about two hours. I just bed the trailer real deep.

It would be great if you could take pictures at this clinic and tell us about it and how he traveled.

OMG $550 ??? thats daylight robbery , I had a C-Section that cost less than that !!! if its that price then I would do the trip too

Personally I wouldnt do it. I have had a gelding bust open the healing several days after having it done by just having him tied in the wash stall grooming him. The process of trying to get a vet out there as blood was pooring out of his body(took a few hours) to have them redo it and the longer healing process afterwords was horrible. I wouldnt risk it but thats me.
