Deb and I took our boys to an Open show today for halter classes. We clipped their heads/necks (and soooo wanted to keep going to see what is under all that hair, but stopped with the neck...lol), cleaned them up alittle (no baths...thankfully they are both "black based"...lol). Of course we were against big horses, too, but there was actually a nice Mini turnout at this show, which was nice to see.

This was Deb's 1st show EVER handling and she did well with Jet! They placed 2 3rds and 2 5ths!!

I am so proud of both of them! I handled my little "butthead" yearling stallion

Khan and he was more interested in the other horses than paying attention...sigh!

He did place 2 4ths, tho, so we'll go with that!

I was really starting to feel like c*** at the show (had been fighting a cough for the past few weeks), so after the show, we went to the doc in the box and I have a sinus infection!

Erin Moore (Moore Acres), who bought my stallion Guiness from me a few months ago, was there as well....and did very well, but I won't spoil it in case she wants to post!

So, in spite of being sick, it was a good show!

Oh...no pics, because we were all in the same classes except for a few....lol

I have to agree, the show had a very nice turnout being earlier in the year.

Guiness did very well for me despite myself being a "newbie" handler in the ring. We entered 5 classes and placed in all but one. The first couple classes he danced a bit, but by the third class he stood great. We need to work on setting the back feet a bit better, but all in all I am very pleased with him! He was anxious to get in the ring, fidgetting the whole time in the warm-up pen. It was all I could do to get him to WALK when the judge called us into the ring. And when I asked for a trot, every time he took a couple strides then broke into a canter, followed by a quirky half rear/buck. Silly two year old.

Stallions, 5th place (6-7 horses)

Solid Color, 4th place (6-7 horses)

Jr Horse, no place (10-12 horses)

Saddle/Pleasure Type, 2nd place (8-9 horses) -- we placed right under Double T Moondust (a GORGEOUS red pinto shetland stallion and a FAV of mine

)

Mini Horse, 2nd place (7-8 horses)

The higher we placed the more excited Guiness got. He leapt completely off the ground and threw a quick buck when we got our first 2nd, I think he knew that he'd done good coming in that close to Moondust

We all had a good time today and can't wait for the next one. CONGRADS to Linda and Deb, you both did an awesome job! See you next weekend!

Edited to add a picture of Guiness and I. Bare in mind it was taken by my non horse show picture taking Grandmother

It came out pretty darn good. She sure tries, gotta love her!

Congratulations ladies. It's hard to place next to the big horses. Talk about apples and Cauliflower. You did great with your placings. The best part is you got your horses out there and showed them early in the season and now on to the mini shows offered during the season. I know Erin has pictures so hopefully she will post some soon.

It was a great show. And thankfully since I was a show virgin, I was showing the more experienced horse. Can't wait for the next show now. And I think Linda did an awesome job with Khan as it was only his second time in the show arena.

Was this the Winter Woollie show at the Clark County Fairground? We were going to enter the driving classes, but

Keith was pooped from his gig last night, so we skipped out.

Instead, I spent the day butchering Mingus with braille clipping for tomorrow's NWMHC schooling clinic and next weekend's Portia clinic.

Congratulations on all of your placings!

If you hear of any other open shows, especially those with driving classes, be sure to post. I prefer driving in open shows to breed shows.

Susanne....Yes, this was the Winter Woolies show! Sorry you couldn't make it!

We'll see you at the clinic next weekend.

Erin knows about another open show...she told me about it earlier, but I don't have details yet.

Susanne, sorry you didn't make it today. Looking forward to seeing you at Casino Gold next weekend for the Portia Clinic. Guiness and I will be there, along with my good friend Tara and her Monarch son, Monty.

Open shows are great. A cheap way to get some show experience under you, or a inexperienced horses belt without breaking the bank at a AMHR or AMHA show. In my area there is a club that hosts 3 or 4 open shows a year that offer mini driving, mini hunter, mini halter, mini showmanship, and mini obstacle. They offer all these classes both open and for youth. Class fees were $3 for a member, $5 for a non member, and an office fee of $5 per horse. So, even if not a member, you could show in 5 classes for $30 (including office fee) which is the cheapest I have seen for a single AMHR class. They offer a high point show too, which is all weekend long. Stalls for that were $25. I think there were around 10 or 12 horses in each class, so you do get a little competition. I just liked the relaxed atmosphere, it really helps cut down the show jitters for those new to showing. Ive been showing horses for around 10 years, and thought I was well over my show jitters until I went to my first AMHR show.

Thanks, Erin! Are you going to the Portia clinic on Friday or Saturday? We'll be there Friday, taking advantage of what I hope will be the less crowded day.

None of the shows currently listed on NW Rider have driving classes, but hopefully there will be some coming up. At least when I get Scarlet driving we can enter PtHA shows, but for now Mingus lacks the spots.

I totally agree that open shows are the bomb. With the abysmal lack of ADS Pleasure shows in the northwest, these are the next best thing. Hopefully I won't have to wait for the Oregon State Fair -- I knew I was blowing it by not going today...

Linda,

Do you know if Linda Van Fleet's driving show is strictly 4-H? I can't find the listing now on the sales board.

I will be going on Saturday as I have to request a day off in order to go, and Saturday is the easier of the two to cover

And BTW, Linda Van Fleets show is open to everyone as far as I know. You can email her, she will be more than happy to answer questions I'm sure. Nice gal.

Congratulations to you all! Erin, my boy Guiness looks GREAT!!!! I'm so happy for you. Linda and Deb - you make me so jealous....I want to be in the ring right now, but we have ICE and SNOW!!!

I was wearing a slightly warmer outfit today..........like a winter coat and gloves, a long sleeve shirt and a sweatshirt. Part of me hopes it rains there tonight

Adam,

Does this mean we can blame the rain and freezing temps forecast for tomorrow night ON YOU?

Linda, Deb and Erin, congratulations! You all did well and Guiness (the only one we can see) looks great.

Adam, you are SO on my poop list. That rain you sent hit halfway through the NWMHC clinic and made packing up and driving home miserable! Boo....

Hmm. You know, I've been ignoring my local saddleclub shows since I stopped riding because they have no driving or in-hand trail classes and my gelding isn't a halter horse but now that I have a young stallion who needs some seasoning that might be something to consider. It's close to my house, cheap, and would give him some great exposure. Thanks for the idea!

Congratulations, ladies! I agree, open shows are great. There used to be some shows with mini classes in TX, but I think they've cut them out now. Participation dropped really low. That is where I started, years ago.
