I was just curious does anyone on here show just in halter or just in performance? I am seriously thinking next year we are focousing more on performance than anything. Or if you have too choose which would you prefer?

I would definitely choose performance, and in fact for the past couple of years have been moving away from halter. Nothing against it at all, but I just like performance more - halter is a bit boring to me, and I'm not a breeder, so I don't have to go in halter to promote my homebred horses.

Halter for me, not that I don't like performance, but halter is sort of like a horse beauty pageant to me, showing off their assets/conformation. I am a small breeder and I like to see how my horses are coming along each year.

I feel similarly to Erica.

So far, I have yet to show in very few performance classes and I guess the nervousness of it all has not worn off.

I LOVE being in the ring w/all the beautiful horses showing off and to be rewarded with a first place or Grand Champ ribbon for a horse I have bred and raised, and trained/groomed is just the best!

I MAY change my mind in the future, as I do plan on doing more performance stuff now that Mouse will be a three year old, but I do enjoy Halter most of all at this point.

I used to say performance, because it's fun to DO things with horses, but now I think I prefer halter. But, part of why is bad on me... you can do Halter first, then leave and do other things with the day instead of being at the show all day. For me, I can have just as much fun, if not more, doing performance at home, and a good halter horse by definition is built to perform because the function follows the form.

I voted both.... I can easily do halter but I want halter horses that can DO things too.

We usually do either both or just halter, but if I had my choice, I would do only performance. I enjoy it more (driving) than halter. My husband likes both however, which is why we do both.

I like halter but i want a horse that can perform! i have all young horses except a broodmare....all my youngsters will be worked in performance (as they get to that age) whether they show or not!

I couldnt pick. I love to do stuff with the horses(jumping driving & what not) But I also love it when some one tells me that I have a good looking horse. There is no better way to hear you have a good looking horse then to place in a halter class.

I picked performance, I could give up halter, but not driving classes! I used to really dislike halter, boring, but recently I've been showing a horse that loves halter, that always makes it more fun! Plus, he wins, another bonus!

My thought is, you put all the work into a halter horse, you go in the ring and they're not what the judge likes, it doesn't matter how well they show, that's it. You go in a driving or other performance class, and regardless of where you place you are able to judge your own performance against yourself, and know that you had a better run than last time, or whatever. For that reason alone, I choose performance!

Yep I agree Halter.. i am not the best at it in fact kinda a doofus but I love it and love to see in different states as well as Nationals how my breeding program is holding up

I can halter a horse all day long in a show. Love it. But the horse also has to be able to MOVE and be useful too. A horse that just stands there looking pretty is nice, but it's not enough for me.

Both! I love the beauty of halter, but also the adrienaline rush while jumping a jumper course(and all the other performance disciplines).

We have horses that do both halter and performance which is nice for multi-purposes. I prefer halter but I'll do both in the other hand, my husband prefers the performance classes so sometimes we divide the classes up between us during show season. I am fortunate that my husband is involved as much as myself in sharing our interests together.

I'm not all that fond of showing halter, I much prefer performance, but I show my horses in halter anyway since I have a breeding program and want to get an opinion of how my horses are doing compared to others. And, my goal has always been to have horses that can halter AND performance, and so far that is what they are.

I would have to say halter. There is so much work that goes into the process of preparing a horse for the showring in halter...i mean these guys eat and dress better than i do sometimes! I have done some driving and while it is fun , i must say that i get an exhilaration out of showing halter. Plus, when you show halter you show against some of the biggest professionals in the miniature horse business ...most of which...only show halter. I like both but i LOVE halter!
