I have a three year old gelding, I had his teeth floated last Monday, the next day I was out in the pasture and it had just snowed, and I noticed a spot in the snow that was pink, like a can of cherry 7-up had been dumped. I went and cleaned out the stall and did not see this color in the wet shavings, but still was concerned. I waited to see him urinate in his stall to see if he was having any problems going, and he wasn't. I quickly grabbed a paper towel and wiped his genitals to see if I saw any color, I didn't.see anything. I have kept a close eye on him, he is eating the same, and is as active as he always is. I thought MAYBE he had some bleeding after his teeth were floated and it passed through his urine, just a thought. But this morning I went out to feed and he must of laid in some of his urine and there on his fur was that same pinkish color! The vet is scheduled to come out on this Thursday for yearly shots, but should I get him out here sooner? There is no fever, or anything out of the ordinary. The only change recently was I got some new hay,but it is the same farm I always get it from. I looked it over to see if I saw anything different, I did see dried strands of grass that looked brownish but had a pinkish hue to them, don't know if they were there before, never noticed. Called the people I got it from, they said same hay as I always got. So.... does anyone have any feedback at what could be going on? I really appreciate your opinions!!!!! Thanks in advance I will keep you posted.

Scarey but very normal. For some reason a horse's urine looks very dark against snow varying from a dark orange to a reddish hue. As long as he has no temp or urinary discomfort he most likely is just fine.

Normal.. I can't remember what is in the horses urine..but it reacts to UV light of the sun and turns to a red/orangish color when exposed. You especially notice it on snow as it's so white.

I notice it too sometimes in their stalls during the winter as our shavings tend to freeze and the color shows up then! It is scary the first time you see it!
