i have a very dear friend Howard who lost his wife to cancer a few years ago after a LONG battle... he was so depressed after she was gone, we would go to lunch and i would try to get him to smile... one day he said to me "i'm so lonely" and i told him i knew a nice lady when he was ready, he about pounced on me, "I'M READY" - so i asked my wonderful neighbor Barb if she would be interested in a blind date and long story short a year later they were married... Barb had horses earlier in life but was without for quite a while, and since Howard owned and rode horses, she got her very own again, and they have been happily riding all over the place... well Barb told me her life had taken a turn she never expected and it was all my fault - but she was happy about it! she just loved to tease me...

Howard has been having stomach pains for a while and they have been going to various doctors having tests and procedures to figure out what is going on... and i got this e-mail from her today about their trip to Mayo here in AZ:

"WE ARE HOME!! Mayo Hospital is tops: the nurses, the food, the Drs( they are special)--but home is best. Howard has an inoperable pancreatic cancer. We will be going to Sedona to the cancer center there for radiation and chemo in the hopes that it will shrink the tumor so his pain will be less. He should have some good days they tell us in the 6 to 9 months he has left. It is very hard to accept this. Please call or come visit him and pray for us. We would so like to have at least one more ride together. Ask God to spare him from so much pain and the strength for me to be the very best care-taker he could ever have. Barb"

i am stunned by this news, it just breaks my heart - they have only had 3 short years together and they have been so happy... please, please, send prayers for my dear friends Howard and Barb Remmers! i will be forever grateful!!!!

My prayers going out to Barb and Howard...and may God hold them both in his calm healing hands.

Susan, You KNOW I will be keeping them in my thoughts and prayers. That darn cancer is just claiming the lives of so many good people. I wish they could find a cure for all types of it. I hope Barb and Howard get to take there last ride together someplace very special. Memories are made to last. Corinne

This is so sad. My prayers go out to both of them and for you for being such a good friend and helping them. At least they have had a few good years together and God willing hopefully he can be helped and they will have a few more. Please give them our prayers.

prayers and good wishes coming from here but i just have to tell you and please pass this on to your dear friend...this diagnosis does not have to mean all hope is gone.

my husband was diagnosed with stage IV renal cell (kidney) cancer. his oncologist would not give us a time frame but everything i read indicated 6 to 9 months. that was 18 months ago. since the time of diagnosis, there have been THREE new drugs targeting kidney cancer. so far, we have only tried one of them and for the past 8 months, it has kept gary's tumors in check...no spreading and no new tumors.

medical science is developing new treatments every single day. we canNOT give up hope just because at the present time, there seems to be none. there is tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that and miracles happen every single day!

Thoughts and prayers being sent!!

My mother was told she only had 3 months after she was diagnosed with cancer. She also lived 18 months.

Oh how terribly bittersweet. I am so sorry they had such a short time together. But he was lonely and in the end he won't be alone Susan. You did that for him. That is what he was so scared of. I am sorry and definately will pray for them. They both sound wonderful.

I will of course add them to the prayers. Her letter brought tears to my eyes. The emotion and love they share for each other is amazing. Praying that he has more than one good ride with her and that he lives without pain much longer than the doctors give him. (((Hugs))) to both you and them.

Added: My grandfather was diagnosed with cancer in 1990. He was given 2 to 6 months to live. 2 years later the doctors were still running tests to find out why he was still alive. You never know. Miracles can and sometimes do happen.

Prayers coming from Manitoba!

But, I know another person who was given 6 months and she is still alive about 6 years later! That woman has had no real treatment either--she has been hospitalized a few times with stomach pain, but she always gets to go home, & seems to be no worse after each episode. I've known 2 others who haven't been as fortunate, but it goes to show you just never know. Some do outlive the doctor's time line for them!

Find comfort in knowing that if your friend doesn't beat the odds, at least he's had happiness these last years, and won't be alone at the end of his life. That is worth a lot I'm sure.
